Frostbite highlighted something we did once plan, but did not follow through with.
An AusPrep get together.
The last one was going to be in Central NSW, but events occured that did not see this through.
So, how about it - what do you think of a Get Together??? This will be for ALL the members/families of this forum. We are living in a vast continent, and realise that not everyone could attend.
I could arrange a get together in the Flinders Ranges in SA ( central to the whole of Aus ) - homestead living/cooking/ trapping/hunting (goats, rabbits, foxes, roos - permits supplied) on over 20,000 acres. No power, an old homestead, long drop, water ( sometimes ), and plenty of peace and quiet. Usually accessible by sedan/caravan/trailer - depends on when it last rained! It's a 6 hr drive for me, but those in Qld/NSW/WA will be a lot longer.
Distances may need to dictate 2-3 get togethers nation wide. We will leave this open to suggestions and go from there.

I'd be keen, with a couple of issues:
- It's too far a drive for me for just a short stay. How far is that with a hire car from the domestic airport? - I'd have trouble flying with cooking gear, firearms, knives, etc. Would someone be so kind as to pick up the slack for me on this?
It obviously depends on my ability to take some time off work, but I should be able to work something out (as long as it's before Sept., maybe Oct).

We did have a small get together last Xmas in SEQ. For my money it went well and I'm keen to do something similar again.
SA is too far for me though, CQ or SEQ obviously are good for me, but northern NSW could be doable as well.

SA is also a little to far. SEQ would be best for my family, My only problem is we have a big trip planned for the end of the year and it is hard to get away before then.( in saying that I am camping in two weeks and doing some filming for a tv show about camping and fishing so that should be fun.its mainly for the wife and her job Im just a tag along.) damn our glorious giant country!!
There is no way I could do any of the eastern states, not with Mrs Reth and 3 little Reths. SA "maybe" if its a WE or something and i buy Mrs Reth something shiny in return, but a trip over east would definitely be holiday level for the family so couldnt come alone, and saving for a house ( and spending said savings on more preps) makes going on hols hard.

The format I generally use is to hold local meets by myself in Sydney/Illawarra, or by my brother around Brisbane, which usually consist of a lunchtime meet up/bbq, perhaps a short hike. This is a way of getting to know each other a little, trying to get a gauge of the doers from the dreamers, weed out any potential weirdo's, before inviting the good one's to a 3 day stay on my property.... Back in my more active bushwalking days I eventually wound up with a core of 4-5 people. We had all been on several long walks together (including the now legendary Holland Gorge death march in the Budawangs) and it became just a case of phone up and saying something like "How about 5 days through Karijini". We all knew what to take and what to do and that no matter what the conditions we would just knuckle down and deal with it. However on one walk up on Kosi I allowed friends of friends along. Anyone who has spent time in the high country will know just how fast the conditions can turn to shite, and that happened this time. About half an hour from Lake Albina the weather closed in and we had maybe 50M vis, and freezing rain. These people only had jeans and $5 rain jackets. By the time we reached the lake they were in trouble and we set up their tent and bundled them inside to get into dry gear and sleeping bags. Next day things cleared a bit so they and one of the core guys walked out while we hung around to take photos. My bad for not vetting them better and a meet at a pub or something, or even better a day walk, would have either weeded them out or made me insist on them buying better gear. The bottom line is that you need to spend some time with people to suss them out, reading and posting here is a start but at some point you need face to face time. A little OT I guess but here's a short essay I wrote about this walk the day after the aforementioned event. robgray.com/grayoutdoors/essays/highs_and_lows.phpMan after reading that for the first time in years I really need to get back up in the Kosi high country.

20000 acres? really? Private property? OK, have seen the other thread...Ill be quiet now. Yeah, this particular property is, but it is a family affair, there is another 4500 acres close by, and another 15000-20000 acres about 30 min from this place as well. Been going there since I was about 7yrs old - lots of places to explore!!!!! It's primarily a sheep station, with some cattle as well. On the above points, yes, there is always the issue of not knowing who is who, and who has what skills. It's a risk for sure. Not sure how we could get around this, unless we start out with a state meet, then this is broken down to who would be suitable for the Big meet - invite only. Thoughts???

I'd love meet up with others in WA before going interstate. Any objections to me posting a new poll thread asking which state members are in?

So I have read through this, some interesting points and all are valid, however the idea is that this event is open to everyone is it not, for people like me who have been taking advice from you guys cause I do have a lot to learn, it is a chance for ALL of us to get together and do what we all enjoy (getting out in the bush why else are we here), not just for the most experienced of us or the best prepared. Agree there needs to be extreme caution with trusting strangers on your property with a loaded gun or just being near them in general so let's take the guns out of it lets just do some bush craft bush walking and a nice big BBQ/spit roast. Also as pointed out we have a massive country, if you hold 1 event for everyone in the country you will have less of a turn out then haveing as mentioned previously state get togethers (maybe even regularly say every 3 months) and a big national get together once a year were attending at least 1 state meeting is mandatory ( this means before there are guns or weapons involved at least some of the members have met them at a state level and already know weather they are trustworthy) maybe state delegates to hold run these meetings and report back to site admin on anybody who may be a concern. In general this is an amazing idea, there are so many of you I would really enjoy meeting and learning from 1st hand, this would be an experience I don't think money could buy(not money I have anyway) and I'm pretty sure afew of you are better survivalist then bear grills as I recon afew of you could survive months if not indefinitely without civilisation and still not be forced to drink your own pee to survive. In saying this just going for a bush walk with these people would be a learning experience, watching what they are watching (probably asking why we are watching it) what they avoid how they pick there path and again why they pick that path ect. So with our fair share of noobs on this page there would be a real chance for us to learn (if your observant) with just the simplest of activities. I really hope this happens in 1 way or another and I really hope I can attend

I really hope this happens in 1 way or another and I really hope I can attend NCP - you bring up some good valid points - which is something we strive for here - it's ok to share a point, to disagree ( nicely of course ), and to be treated with respect!!!! What we are thrashing out is ideas, and see what people want - and you have brought up a valid point that there are those with vastly differing experiences and knowledge in preparedness. In all honesty, this is something I overlooked when starting this thread!!! Yes, it is a great idea to have a state get together, and a once a year national get together. I think that the more experienced/longer serving members could get this going for each state ( I could do a similar but smaller SA event ), and yes, the National event is open to all members. It would be up to admin to run the event and have the ground rules set out before people attend. Again, thankyou for exposing my oversight. Look forward to the catch ups!!!!! More to follow - on the state events, could those interested in running one please pm me and we can get the ball rolling!

Happy to help, I would volunteer to help with state event but as I said I am a bit of a noob (compared to Many of the members here) and I rent a city block I don't think I could offer much in organising sorry, I can't teach many things of use and I don't have a property suitable for this type of function. But if asked I will contribute whatever I can to make this happen (probably only be useful as a spare set of hands though), as preppers we are all cautious by nature, this has made a huge gap in the community as most of us only know other preppers by screen names and can only offer information on a screen, which wile useful and I am greatful for it is not the same as learning hands on, which most of us never get the opportunity to learn or teach as there is not enough of these types of events to safely meet other similar minded people which you can both teach and learn from, I believe if this is successful it may help share so much to so many people wich in bug out situations may save your/your whole families lives and help open up alil much needed trust amoungest the prepping society wich in turn will make newcomers more welcome and again make it so much easier to learn these possible life saving skills.. I could not imagine a worse situation then my son relying on me in a situation were his life was in danger or even just getting hurt and I did not know what to do, in my books that wouldn't make me much of a father hence why I am so interested in an event happening so I can learn how to protect my family in any situation especially those unforseable situations

Shot show Melbourne may 23 A must!!! Any Vic's want to meet? Gasman, I'll second that motion. I'll be there on Sat, should we learn a secret sign so we know each other lol. Obviously a certain spot and time, it's at the Showgrounds and my immediate instinct is to meet where I went as kids [assuming it's still there] the pie in the sky!

Keep an eye on the State/Territory thread for details of any pending NSW meet.
