I went and started a knife making course today with Tradition Iron at Petrie. This is the second course I have done there, first one was the basic Blacksmith course. So todays project was to make a knife out of a railway spike. So we started with this.

So the design was up to you, so I drew the spike out and put a twist in it.

Then came the clean up and the heat treating.

So I brought it home to clean it up, gave it a quick sand and sharpened it.

It is now shaving sharp and I even slipped and cut myself, So I put it against some wood to see how it would go.

Stainless steel pins with Mahogany handles. It turned out really well, I got home and sharpened it then I started to put it though its passes.. I have to get use to the sweep on the blade but I got it to feather stick quite well and got a fire started with the back of the blade with a ferrol rod. So far very happy.

I also knocked this up quickly between heat treating the knife, made out of an old file. It throws better sparks then the one I just purchased off the internet.
