Did you know that Red Feather Pure Creamery Canned Butter is now available in a more convenient 340g can vs the 454g variety? Not only that, but the price per 100g is slightly less expensive as well. Purchased directly through Ballantyne: 12 x 340g for $55.20 = $1.35 / 100g vs 24 x 454g for $150.00 = $1.37 / 100g redfeatherbutter.com.au/Hopefully they will make this product more readily available to the general public.

3100kJ/100g = 1 can equates to 10540kj for 340g for $4.60. Not that you'd eat a full can but that puts it about $3.80 for an average days worth of energy [8700kj]. Fat is an essential part of your diet and one of the harder things to prep for. After seeing the videos of canned fats that are 70 years old, I'm not particularly concerned about fat going rancid in the absence of air. [waxed hard cheese for instance lasts a good amount of time].
Ideally we need about 70-80g of fat/day and there's plenty in there [81g/100g] so it would make a good compliment with other foods, particularly if they're low in fat. Overall a good resource.

From Down Periscope. Executive Officer Martin T. 'Marty' Pascal: Jesus, Buckman! This stuff's been on the Stingray since Korea! This can expired in 1966!
Seaman Buckman: [tasting contents of can] What's the matter sir? It still tastes like creamed corn.
Executive Officer Martin T. 'Marty' Pascal: Except it's – DEVILED HAM!
Seaman Buckman: Now that would be a problem.

I'm assuming 4-5 years without any issues, but kept cool and dry maybe 10? Worth noting that my cans were packed in February 2016 and have a Best Buy date of Feb 2018.

I have some still that were packed in April 2013! So 3 and half years so far. I opened one tonight and it does seem a little rancid but they may be because it got a little hot in summer before we were able to keep the room it was stored in cool! it will be fine to cook with! It is very salty butter

Ahh... so perhaps we can infer that this kind of tinned butter does go that way. Ghee [clarified butter] seems to last a long time according to anecdotal evidence. Hmm.

I'd never heard of this until I read that "Going Home" series

I'd never heard of this until I read that "Going Home" series They mention the butter, but they talk a lot about the Red Feather Canned Cheese. It would appear that they no longer produce this...most prepper websites now stock canned Bega cheese where they used to stock Red Feather. All the more reason to stock Kraft Deluxe Mac & Cheese - the tin of processed cheese can be used for any recipes you like:

No, they are talking about the original Kraft Macaroni & Cheese (very different from what you can get here): The original is still the best! I've got 30+ boxes of this stored away in addition to the Deluxe.

Opened a can of Red Feather Butter tonight and it was delicious- so creamy!
Each can comes with a plastic lid to reseal. Only complaint is that you need a can opener - a pull-top would be so much more convenient.

If any of the Perth guys find a stockist for Bega canned cheese please share. Benara fresh stock red feather butter, last lot I bought was a hell of a lot cheaper than anything I could find online, the missus even liked the butter and she is bloody fussy.

I can't say for sure, but the Re-Store in Leederville stocks some great canned goods (as well as a lot of amazing Italian & other European items), and Napoli Mercato in Harrisdale has some out-there stuff too. Both are great sources of (not cheap) but gourmet preserved foodstuffs. And the Italian desserts at both stores are to die for...

When I've looked into canned Bega and Kraft cheese in the past, I've been advised that Australia is the world's leader in canned cheese, but it is all for export. I was told you can only purchase it though peeper sites. This is an interesting site all about Australian canned cheese: www.canned-cheese.com

Just finished up a can of the butter and my family loves the stuff. Passed the test for cooking, baking and general consumption. Switched back to normal butter and it is not nearly as creamy. The challenge will be to keep from hitting the stockpile too hard, because it was a difficult prep to secure- took me months to be able to purchase at the price listed in the original post.
