I would have thought every grunt had heard of the rat pack challenge, where you eat the entire contents of a 24hr ration pack in one sitting, and yes, that includes the tea bags and tiolet paper.
My army mates think I'm a freak, I genuinely love them. Well, as much as I like to chow down on a solid meal of toilet paper and tea bags every now and then, I have to say, as a former grunt, I have never heard of this particular Rat Pack Challenge. In my old Infantry days, the challenge with eating Rat Packs was just to be able to take normal dump afterwards. Are you sure this is not a challenge developed for Catering Corps personnel?
Thanks frostbite. Maybe one day.

Below a vid of a bad ass prepper!! he even appeared on doomsday peppers, a very good interview by Canadian Prepper. Short vid on big city prepping and what will cause people to go crazy and under what circumstances first respondents will neglect duty and leave the people to themselves. He is real bad-ass martial arts guy and anti gov as. Off the record he works as a first responded in New York city (18y) he talks briefly about 9/11 and super storm sandy and how the people reacted. One of the better vids I have seen in a long time.
I am wondering under what category he falls in the now infamous PhD thesis. I personally have two masters degrees in different disciplines but never bothered with PhD, as once one goes down that route you are seen as an academic and no one take you seriously in the working world.

What amazes me is a guy can spend years studding prepping and still call it radial lifestyle and not get the notion to start prepping himself. There have been lots of posts talking about local disasters and how prepping has helped not only the prepper but the general community. Also the more prepared people there are the less drain on rescue resources.
Come some disaster and the guy with a phD (heisenberg) in prepping will be sitting there with a bunch of notebooks to eat, thinking's about how his 'normal' lifestyle is so superior or non radical.
In Switzerland and Israel it is mandatory that every dwelling have a bunker with supplies. Last year the German and USA governments encouraged people to get at least 2 weeks of supplies in case of disaster. WOW the whole world is going radical.

. . . in the now infamous PhD thesis. Thank you all for your comments - very much appreciated. As a final reply from me in this thread, I do understand that not everyone has the time or desire to read the full 90,000-word thesis, so here is the five-minute explanation version for your convenience.
Title: Charting The Path Of Radicalisation In The Australian Survivalist Sub-Culture.
Research Area: Security Studies and Criminology - Radicalisation Theories.
Main Research Goal of the Thesis: To contribute to the academic (theoretical) debate around non-violent radicalisation pathways by examining a suggested behavioural and ideological development path for the Australian Survivalist Sub-Culture.
Some Key Terms (of Concern) and Their Definitions:
Radicalisation - a behavioural and ideological development process. Note well: ‘radicalisation’ in academia does not mean a definite movement towards violence (that’s the incorrectly used media ‘version’ of the word radicalisation).
Militant Survivalist - the word ‘Militant’ is a term used in the literal sense that identifies Survivalists who openly ‘advocate’ (promote / verbally support only) the use of violence against perceived threats. Note well: ‘Militant’ does not mean someone that has or will definitely engage in acts of real physical violence in our current social circumstances.
How The Main Research Goal Was Achieved: Australian Survivalist behaviours and thought processes were identified and presented in a development sequence, which was emphasised through case studies that outwardly seemed like those of a potential domestic threat. In clear opposition to this assumption, the Australian Survivalist behavioural sequence was found not to include a development stage where acts of actual physical violence were perpetrated. In later discussion chapters, the thesis supported the assertion that the Australian Survivalist development path is a sub-culturally relative non-violent radicalisation process that contributes, as an example, to debates concerning the validity and significance of theorised barrier influences against violent extremist development.
Overarching Finding: In its entirety, my research supports the position that as long as Australian Survivalists are engaging in the activities and thought processes of their current Survivalist life-style (reflected in the identified development pathway), it is unlikely that they will become a violent extremist risk.
Degree Awarded: The thesis, in its entirety, was assessed by three senior academics (who work in the field of security studies) on three different continents [North America, Europe (UK) and Australia] and the degree was awarded, after what amounted to a nine-month process of review. All aspects of the thesis, including its methodology and conclusions were assessed as well-founded.
Final Thought: My PhD was written to contribute to an academic debate only (that’s the sole purpose of a PhD) but as a by-product it can also be used to support / validate the Australian Survivalist life-style choice. My thesis in no way threatens the Sub-Culture, in fact it supports Australian Survivalists in a way that has never been done before and I stand by the results that allow me (or any one of you) to speak against the dangerous Survivalist stereotypes, which only serve to feed the fear of the ill-informed public.

What you're saying is that words in academia have different meanings to the same words used by regular people in ordinary life. "Radicalisation" according to your definition means "a behavioural and ideological development process". So by that measure, your language has been radicalised. I note the term "development" doesn't necessarily imply a positive development...
I don't have a PhD. Heck, I dropped out of two undergraduate courses. But I have an IQ of well over 150 (according to a number of IQ tests administered by PhD's in psychology) and a real estate portfolio that would embarrass those economics PhD's who told me I didn't understand economics. I trust you will excuse my contempt of academia.
Enjoy your shower. I find it beneficial to turn off the hot tap a minute before the end to end with cold water (although I'm not aware of a thesis to support this idea).

Radicalism is usually a non conforming political view with an intention to force change on society. A phD is to bring new knowledge on a subject or some sort of scientific discovery not simply engender discussion between academics it is not the main purpose of any phD- so no we are not on the same page. The fact that the thesis is channelled under "Security Studies and Criminology - Radicalisation Theories." and required security experts from various countries to evaluate the research is a direct indication that {servivalisim/prepping] is considered radial and dangerous and non conforming to society. It also indicates there is a pathway to becoming radical and that those following that "lifestyle" are radical - but not necessary violent, that is just a cop out. Many start prepping due to a bad experience like a natural disaster, some come back from active military service and having experienced first hand how easy it is for a society to collapse, others due to religious beliefs or prophecies of a coming apocalypse others simply from watching the stock market and society collapse due to excessive debt. How is there a pathway or an end result. Many religious groups encourage there members to prep. The Seventh day Adventist & many other christian churches including the Mormon church which has has like 16Million members with strong entrenched preparedness teachings are they also all radicals following a pathway that needs international security evaluation. www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/radicalismDefinition of radicalism. 1 : the quality or state of being radical. 2 : the doctrines or principles of radicals. radicalism. In political science, the term radicalism is the belief that society needs to be changed, and that these changes are only possible through revolutionary means. ... The word radicalism comes from the Latin radicalis, "of or having roots," which in turn arose from radix, or "root." www.dictionary.com/browse/radicalismRadicalism definition, the holding or following of radical or extreme views or principles. See more. dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/radicalradical adjective (SUPPORTING CHANGE) C2 believing or expressing the belief that there should be great or extreme social or political change: He was known as a radical reformer/thinker/politician. These people have very radical views.

Hi. Been away for the past eight days. Interesting conversation.
And frostbites comment about calling out a wannabe Nazi, Jew Hater, you name it hater, is 100% correct. As did a number of us. This person wasn't the first, and I am sure they won't be the last, though we haven't banned anyone for a while, so i guess that shows we are doing ok. The only downside was that this person, after being called out for his beliefs and comments that went against our standards for this forum, deleted his account before we could slam down on the Ban Button ourselves!
BTW, I have a BSc, and was halfway through an MA, when i threw it all in and got a job ( no disrespect intended ). And, thank you for your Service within the ADF!

I can quite confidently say that it is the non preppers who have the highest propensity for violence. In New York City during super storm Sandy the emergency services prioritised evacuating a flooded hospital and they were physically abused and had thing thrown at them as the people were rioting as they had no fuel to heat their houses. It is now unsafe to travel in the Tsunami hit areas. news.sky.com/story/indonesia-tsunami-lack-of-government-response-hinders-rescue-efforts-11515645

My comments are off topic for this thread but it has already moved off topic, so I’ll keep them here for continuity. As there have often been complaints here of stereotyping of preppers, it is my opinion that it is good that research has been done to look at this, and has shown that Australian preppers don’t necessarily fit the stereotype. And I have no problem with people having a career in research. I also think that while people who prep don’t like to be stereotyped, and really shouldn’t be as there are so many differences between the people here, we should be careful not to stereotype others too. There are times preppers can get very critical of “everyone else”. There have been a few times that categories of people that I fit into have been mentioned very negatively here and I’ve wondered if I should just quietly leave the group. I stay because usually I enjoy conversations that I’ve been part of and because I have learnt and try to contribute a little. I’m wondering if heisenberg will stick around and join conversation that is not just about his PhD. Heisenberg, after all your time in prep forums, have you been inspired to prep at all?

Let me qualify one thing I said - I do have time for proper academic research in real sciences (physics, chemistry, medicine, engineering, etc). It's other fields that I often find questionable.

Wow, there hasn't been a thread for a long time that gets everyone riled up about a particular topic.
I guess it all comes down to a predescribed "idea" of preppers from that doomsday prepped show (which I can guarantee that the producers told the participants of to act up and play the hung ho personality in front of the cameras, sure there was 1 or 2 that made it from that show like "southernprepper1") But it falls back on OPSEC and grey man. We don't actively go out and advertise that we are preppers, we just work away quietly minding our own business stashing that little bit of extra food/water etc for whatever we are doing it for beit man made or natural.
The crazy ones who fit the "militant" preppers are usually sorted out quick smart by the police because they big note themselves all over the place and quickly get reported.

This forum and the individuals participating are all on a "watchlist" of one format or another. If you post on here you are on a "watchlist" so be proud and stand tall as it means you are doing something good for your family, other citizens you care about and this land you call home! If you are not on a State or Federal Agency "watchlist" you oughta be embarrassed to be calling yourself a prepper! Ack. Observe, note, investigate, ascertain risk=nil and move on to where surveillance is actually warranted/needed.

What amazes me is a guy can spend years studding prepping and still call it radial lifestyle and not get the notion to start prepping himself. Given that he identified himself with his actual name ... he probably isn't fool enough to counter this ^^
