None of my diesels, generator, tractor and so on, needs ad blue. The tractor even runs on vegi oil, ive tried it, not quite as much power, but a nice smell from the exhaust !

You could probably bodge their systems to make them run in an emergency. I'm sure a few extra emissions would be better than letting logistics collapse.

Remember, a tractor is a device to turn diesel into food.

All the more reason not to follow euro trash regulations.

Aaaaaaand now's the time to be concerned about my diesel car 😂.
Honestly, I don't think your average picnic basket realises how big of an issue this is/will be. I don't have to tell you lot how much of our supply chain relies on it but most people just don't realise the impact. It's going to be a weird couple of years if this continues.
Edit to add: Time to stock up on more dried produce if you can, because they're the first things that will start to go in short supply because they can afford to sit in warehouses for longer.

Just be lucky that you don't have DEF systems on cars yet. Though I could see people filling them up with bars bugs and water thinking its the washer fluid bottle lol

I thought that VW and BMW had the system on their California compliant vehicles ? The supply chains that are already stretched will get worse, so stock up on beans bullets and something else I cant remember ! Being an automotive sparki(as well as an electrical and solar contractor), and working for a harvest contractor, modern trucks that take the ad blue are computer controlled. No ad blue, she no start. Even modern tractors need it and some even need (John Deere especially), a internet connection with head office before they will start, just to get software updates. I think computerization has gone just a bit to far now. Oil and water monitoring is good, as is GPS, but needing an internet connection, sometimes via a satellite link, is just way over the top.
Id like to live like a poor person, but with lots of money.

A lot of this sort of thing is going on now to bypass DPFs and a host of other stuff on modern vehicles...for better or worse.

It is a knock-on effect from major supply chain issues in fertilizer. 2022 is looking like a major disaster..

Its a fairly simple, yet illegal, way of stopping the use of adblu in euro5 cars. Much like the DPF delete.
This is one of the reasons i hate new cars, too much electics and useless shit in them. Give me a motor, 4 wheels and a steering wheel. Simple. When the wife bought a new car, my first question to them was, can i turn all those "safety" features off and leave them off. If not, not buying it.

Surely if we can lock down whole states due to covid, we can temporarily bypass emissions reg to ensure we have a supply chain?

Whilst in theory its possible to reflash the emu, its not that easy as most new vehicles have anti tamper software that can detect such a change and 'brick' the vehicle. It may be possible to change out the whole ecu system, but as it has its tentacles into everything, including the gauges, heater, air con, traction control, transmission, diffs etc, it may also 'brick' the truck. Ive looked at the latest John Deere headers and the amount of interdependent wiring associated with the electronics is astounding. Where to start ? The thing wont start unless its set properly, in the correct position (like where it was when it was last shut down, by the GPS), so if you float transport it to another location, you must leave the system active, otherwise its a phone call to J D and a fee to unlock the machine, providing you have an internet connection. Yes, its gone that far. And dont even think about a flat battery set, it took us nearly a full day to get it activated after changing out the batterys.

John Deere is one of THE biggest targets for ECU & sub-system hacking...they are a big reason why the Right to Repair movement has gained so much ground lately. Don't trust me though, a quick search will tell you a whole movement dedicated to modifying the factory software in these and other vehicles. It's just embedded micros...yes its complex, but most things are these days and geeks love a challenge!
Here's the thing though...if things get bad, I think governments will mandate the companies to change the code. It wont come from us, the owners.

This is yet another reason why all levels of government need to pull their head out of their caboose and get serious about getting this sort of essential stuff manufactured IN Australia so we are not held at the whim of a foreign power such as China who can switch off the supply and cripple the entire country in an instant.

Surely if we can lock down whole states due to covid, we can temporarily bypass emissions reg to ensure we have a supply chain? Diesel emissions are known to be terrible for health. If there's a risk to the supply chain, get rid of it. The sooner we transition to EVs/Hydrogen the better. And get back our manufacturing industry.

Some very pissed of farmers unable to use their equipment because of a minor computer issue.

Bug, agreed to a point, but for now...
Diesel emissions in a crowded CBD, trucks passing a daycare centre...all valid concerns.
Tractor in middle of 10,000 acre wheat field, less of a concern. Tractor idle, big concern. Truck on isolated section of Barkly Higway, no dramas. Truck idle, dramas.
Every ambulance I've ever used also has a modern diesel, as do most hospital generators.
I'm advocating a short term solution. Long term, Gov buys or nationalises Gibson Island (Incitec Pivot) and then ensures gas suppliers must provide gas as feedstock. Then we can locally make urea.

been there before and there was a work around that worked on a 2019 CAT 330F excavator basically no adblue but kept the machine out of limp mode however i couldn't switch it off till i had adblue to refill the tank and let it do its shutdown purge
So there is a way but its tricky
