This topic of digital preparedness has only recently crystalised in my mind as a preparedness thing. We routinely consider grid down SHTF scenarios but I dont think we generally consider SHTF scenarios where the grid is up.
Personally I think the Chinese surveillance state and social scoring system is a SHTF scenario and it is going to get worse when CBDCs arrive and cash disappears and persinal carbon credits along with your social score start to impact on what you can buy and where you can go. Actually I guess we could call it the Dystopia SHTF scenario. We can all curse FB and walk away from it due to its BS "community standards" but what happens when similar BS eco friendly, multicultural & inclusive "for your safety" "community standards" get applied to your daily physical life?
Unfortunately this is a SHTF scenario which is well and truly underway here in the West, not just in China... and you know it.
IMHO these are the reasons preppers ought to be taking steps to protect their privacy by limiting the digital surveillance they facilitate through their mobile phones, other connected devices and financial tracking through credit cards.
Doing so definitely is a backwards step in convenience. Come to think of it it is the digital equivalent of moving out of the city to live in a rural setting.

The net, e mails, the cloud and so on, are all useful tools, and probably some would say, essential to modern life styles. But, everything you do on line, and no doubt a lot of what you do shopping, especially if you use the magic card, is logged, permanently, somewhere by someone. Its just life, and I don't see anyway around it, apart from living as a hermit in the Nepal mountains, but, we can take steps to minimize the intel that is gathered, and it is intel to someone, that we give out on ourselves and our lifestyle.
Use cash for shopping, yes, inconvenient, but will slow down the surveillance on what you get. There are still high resolution cameras in shops that can 'see' what you are buying and do facial recognition to determine who you are, but its a bit harder.
Keep literally under the radar when driving, don't do anything to draw attention to yourself, be a 'grey' man in a non de-script, white Toyota, Mitsubishi, ute with contractors racks on it, etc, motor vehicle. Driving a Bugatti Veyron is just standing out and saying 'look at me'.
When u use the bat phone, keep it to 'standard' type of conversations, such as what the other person is doing etc. Normal stuff, don't discuss prepping etc, and same on the air. Ham radio is a necessity for comms after the fall, but keep it to 'normal' stuff, And its no use making a code up, they can break anything almost in real time.
Web searches are all logged, so be careful.
Just some things to think about.
If Q were castrated, would he become an O ?

Privacy suggestions are as follows:
Disable/remove smart assistants (Alexia, hey google etc)
Use privacy preserving browsers like Brave & duckduckgo ((DDG)
Take the time to optimise those browsers (this is a topic of its own)
Use privacy preserving search engines (DDG)
Switch from apps to browsers if you have to access google/fb/microsoft
Uninstall google apps aka chrome, gmail, maps, youtube etc
Uninstall facebook apps like Fb itself & messenger
Use fully open source & encrypted email services (protonmail)
Replace your phone txt messenger with Signal encrypted txt messenger.
Use a Quality paid VPN
Get & use a password manager to facilitate complex passwords for every site you visit.
Use 2FA to protect any important accounts (email, banking, crypto etc)
Pay cash where possible.
Delete unnecessary apps from your phone.
Turn off google location accuracy (it sneakily uses wifi & BT to pinpoint you with other people who are careless enough to have their location active all the time)
Get used to turning your phone location off by default and only ever tempirarily on.
Use your car's satnav to navigate rather than your phone nav.
Go through your phones permission settings for camera, mic, location etc and yurn that permission off for every app that doesnt have to have it and set access to "only when needed" for apps that must use a certain device.
Turn off face recognition for your devices and tape over the cameras.
This should go without saying but avoid privacy invading apps alltogether.
For any of you that use Linkdn, the hackers Ive spoken with in defence thank you no end.
I will add to the list as Im sure Ive forgotten a few. You will know youre on the right path when youre browsing the big tech web sires and they are constantly checking if you are a human, wanting to send verification codes and trying their best to push you back onto their apps.
Note I have not completely de-googled my phone, doing so is really difficult. The google appstore remains on my phone because it is needed for me to access ordinary apps that I have paid for such as offline topo maps, comms stuff, ballistic calculators among other things. Just keeping it real.
Ps - when I browse with ddg I burn the cookies using the flame icon at the start or end of a browsing session and I never 'fireproof' a website because that means leaving its cookies in-tact.

I often leave my phone at home. I was at a 50th birthday/surprise wedding on Friday night. Everyone except me was on their phone, even a 10 month old baby. My phone was in a drawer at home.
The unvaxxed got a free trial of this type of social credit exclusion during the lockdown. I got around it then. I'll get around it in the future.
Govt is to serve me, not to rule me. They need to be reminded of this.

Govt is to serve me, not to rule me. No offence there Fb but you are kidding right? Modern governments are long past any noble goals of serving the people. They serve themselves. They respond to the influence of the wealthy and mere mortals are a readily manipulated means to their ends.

It got leaked out that head HR had a strict quote for the 2023 intake of 80% females and 20% minority/LGBQ crowd. Pretty much making it 0% chance for any straight white male to get a spot as an apprentice next year. Also DDG got caught out allowing Microsoft trackers to still work. www.techradar.com/au/news/duckduckgo-in-hot-water-over-hidden-tracking-agreement-with-microsoft

The defence force and police have been doing it for years. Most mining companies now have racist hiring policies and they aren't even remotely ashamed of it. They are even putting racist requirements in tenders for subcontractors now.

I can recommend "Security Now" on the TWiT Network if you want to keep up with what's happening in the security world. Been listening to it for over a decade now.

Yup NSW .Gov paying 25 million dollars for an aboriginal flag on the bridge and the premier saying he doesnt know where the money comes from. It is BS and demonstrates the utter waste of tax revenue by governments. As they go on longer they get bigger, more bureacratic, more controlling, more expensive, less efficient and completely out of touch. I do not see it changing until some catastrophe completely changes the existing world governance structure. It has happened over and over in history and it is short sighted to think that society will not collapse and change in a fundamental way once again. /Endrant @ .gov!

Good tips there,
I would suggest searx as an alternative to duckduckgo, they surrender user data to Microsoft.
I use a dumb phone (opel mobile big button) for day to stuff and a laptop at the end of the day to catch up on emails and forums like this one. The opel has no social media apps on it, very basic stuff, doesnt even have a web browser. Really hard to send sms on it too, so it make you call people and leave voice messages, the way it should be for a phone imo.

I think it really depends on how much engagement you have with your government, I mean practically speaking what impact does their involvement really have on your day to day life? The moves I think folk should make are; -getting out of debt so the moves of the RBA don’t bother you. -Move to a place where the local culture suits you. -Be aware of any assistance/benefits you are entitled to and get what you are entitled to. -ensure you maintain privacy where possible. Outside of these things there’s just very little reason to engage unless your occupation requires it.

Oh & the fuss over DDG & Microsoft is typical of people arcing up over a headline and not checking the details. That Microsoft issue pertains to Bing & Linkdn ... if you are using those then you are not taking your security seriously at all and DDG's connection with Microsft on that matter is the least of your privacy concerns.

I've never used Facebook and when a former colleague mentioned he used Facebook I was surprised considering he was in the IT security team. He explained that he only used it as a means to communicate with his former army buddies. He made sure nothing on his Facebook account was real. A fake name, fake job, fake hometown, fake school history and all his photos were fake. Almost everyday he put a different photo of a random person pretending it was him. Apparently most of his army buddies did the same.

Never been on facefa.t r never will, even with a false e mail, and identity, as this one is.
Facial recognition etc has become so good, you cant go anywhere without triggering it, even on the highway speed cameras, big brother is watching you, all the time and you cant get out of it. Go into a Wollies or Coles, you've been snapped on camera, got petrol, you've been snapped on camera.
There is no doubt a dossier on every person, likes, sexuality, facebook preferences, e mails, etc. The best you might be able to do is to post confusing info. That might get you some reprieve, but not for long.
If speed scares you, try Windows....

I don't think he accessed it via a phone. Can't say for sure now, but I know he used TOR on a laptop back then - maybe about 5 years ago.
