Yeah, you can stand tall and be proud. I hope it never ever comes to this, but your willingness to give the ultimate sacrifice to this great country is commendable. You have my gratitude also!

I guess my main question in this thread was how hardy are our young people today or do you think they have become so entitled that they would not be willing to stand up for this country? Also how do we prepare them for this?

hi, this is coming from a conscript I spent 2.5 years serving my nation (albeit as a combat clerk! due to my health status). Unlike my peers, I considered upgrading my status to a full combat status but decided against it after they packed me off as a computer operator (selfish I know, but I was considering my future _after_ my service term). But I would dare say that I was proud that I served that 2.5 years and the 10 years I spent as a reservist. I got to fire a M-16, clean and about the cleaning. I got to learn infantry tactics, digging a shell scrape and learnt how to build a basha (field tent with 2 ground sheets and a pair of basha sticks). I learnt resilience and when to shut up and when to push myself forward. I am proud to have been a soldier (even a handicapped one) and would take up arms to protect my nation, even if I would be cannon fodder. I do believe that when push comes to shove, most of the native Singaporeans would take up arms and even some of the ex China and _newly minted_ Singaporeans would too. If I have a son, I would regale him with not how tough training would be but what an honour it is, serving our nation.

Can't now, my back and hips are shot, can't even stand in one spot for too long without serious pain anymore. They should have taken their opportunity and accepted me before I wised up to the politics and stuffed my body up.

Also how do we prepare them for this? They're as weak as piss and are used to having everything handed to them in a polite manner. The Australian Army has changed so much in the last 20 years it's not funny and it's not for the better either. Too much cotton wool and too many weirdo's allowed in. In 2002 Military recruiting was taken over by Civilians and they lowered all the entry requirements so they could boost their recruitment numbers and get even the dullest individual over the line, all so they could get their contract renewed after their tenure was up and get more money! Regiments and troops became full of wimps, cry babys and same sex fraternizers. It was a disgusting and disgraceful sight to see the uniform betrayed the way it was. Trainers became frustrated and tried their utmost to have many removed and trade tested after they were qualified but all the Red " High stress " cards were flashed all over the place and people were on suicide watch and all manner of rubbish. And all of this because of the way children are brought up these days. Soft. So yes Remnantprep I'm of the opinion that most Uni student 'make love not war' types would not care about an invasion and crimes against humanity etc etc. They're all for picketing and rioting in the streets of course but would rather just protest and make nuisances of themselves instead of actually doing any Real good as it requires courage, intestinal fortitude, strength, honour and above all.....Integrity. The Army still has plenty of Great Men and Women doing what needs to be done, but not without hindrance from the weak hearts. Good luck to us all.

I always knew there was an element of expertise missing from the Army's Marksman program. Little did I know it was you. What have you done to yourself to be such a mess?

Had kids lol, I'm unlucky enough to have spd, which caused sciatica, just crapped out in the genetic lottery. And ftr, I can hold off doing a crap for days. Once was 4 days. Simply because the facilities were appallingly filthy. Btw not all girls my age are coddled, soft and weak. Some of us grew up tougher than most men the same age. Hell, I broke cattle for show that were tougher than plenty of men.

Mate, nothing wrong with being a Combat Clerk - AND, you have my admiration and respect for what you have done for your country, and if the SHTF, what you are willing to do to protect your homeland.

thanks Jay.
for us males on this sunny little island, national service is something which the new generation hope to escape. we have the same cotton wool strawberry generation which PT has mentioned. I think this is going around the world as we have too much peace.

Spot on - while we get complacent, softer and politically correct, our enemies train harder and harder. Society gets softer and weaker, and makes more excuses not to pull their weight, and our enemies get harder and harder. Then if the SHTF, watch everyone throw up their arms in surrender!!! Mate, I LOVE your attitude re this!!

Now that's another thread that could get messy - conscription!!! I'll leave that alone!!
But, at least you won't run for the hills at the first sound of gun fire!!
We don't have conscription here, nor compulsory military service. All our service is voluntary! But as PT alluded to - there is a level of complacency here - and that is dangerous. I have very strong views about our military and service to the flag, and, if I had to would have no qualms putting a bullet between the eyes of a shirker/coward who refuses to heed the call to arms.
But as I mentioned, I dearly hope that war never reaches our shores ( nor yours ) nor that our lads/girls are called up to protect another nation - but, if it came to it, then I'm in 100%
As Rem stated, what do our youth today think?? Well, I'm torn - being in the bush, there are a lot that would heed the call - our Anzac day service proves this - 6 yrs ago we were lucky to have 150 turn up, now we have 1000, and most are the younger generation. There is that feeling of pride, patriotism, and sense of duty. But, on the other hand, there are those who think that the govt owes them a hand out every fortnight, and how dare anyone expect anything from them!! Oh well, they'll make good targets!!

Im a bit in two minds about this. Mainly i guess because i cant do what i want to do (damn you Q-store) I think it would be good to get kids off the streets and fight unemployment, but on the other hand, will it make it tougher for the guys and gals that really WANT to enlist?
