I support stockpiling peanut butter...I've used Jif years after it expired with no ill effects. I find that the US stuff lasts longer than the AUS stuff. I've got 8 jars of the Woolworths 'American' peanut butter downstairs. Appears Aldi's is manufactured in the same plant in the US.

I've been contemplating the merits of stocking instant ice packs or pressurized aerosol (keyboard spray turned upside down freezes most everything it comes in contact with) as a means of chilling things (champagne, etc). Was never something I thought about when there are 10' snow banks outside, but a cold drink in summer is quite civilized and would be amazingly luxurious.

As told to me by my wife: "what did the snowman eat for lunch? Icebergers!"
As tod to me by my 3 year old: "what did the snowman eat for lunch? Sausages!" Followed by uproarious laughter as she repeats 'sausages' over and over.

Brother from another mother? My dad was a milkman after all...
(No offence intended to your mother!)

My wife is the red wine drinker. I buy it, she drinks it. I asked her about Annies Lane and she would like to give it a go.

No wine - red or white - for me. I try it a few times a year, but have no palate for it. I enjoy Whiskey (Scotch and Japanese) and legends have been written about my beer drinking, but I prefer to drink competitively, so don't do it often...doesn't usually end well for the ones I'm with. These days I prefer to eat my calories.

Apparently for my wife it would be champagne. Noticed a case with my preps in the basement the other day. Convenient storage space? Or maybe she's coming around to prepping. Either way, I just smiled to myself and mentally added the bottles to my list of alcohol and the calories to my running total.

It has been over a year since the challenge was issued and accepted...wonder when they'll set a date. Anyone else thinking Terminator/Skynet?

Growing up, Sterno was a readily available canned fuel gel for camping and hiking. Sterno is INSANELY expensive here in Australia, but I have recently found an alternative in Ezygel methanol fuel cans.
Great for a BOB, car survival kit, as a source of fuel or fire starter. I paid like $1.85 a can and they will burn 2-3 hours (you can recap to extinguish the flame and reuse), but bigger cans are available.
I've found 72 can cases for $93 and you can also buy in bulk - 4kg buckets for refilling your cans for only $23.50.
The same company makes cans of Easy Heaters Liquid Fuel - pure diethelyne glycol with a braided wick. These have the added benefit that the can stays cool to the touch.
I picked up 15 Ezygel cans today and noted that the cans themselves aren't as robust as Sterno cans. They banged around in a bag for an hour with no problems, but I am planning on tossing one in a ziplock bag and testing the durability of the can by dropping a few times (especially upside down and on an angle). Will report back.

If it lasts 7+ months with no special storage (see comments), removing the oxygen would surely increase this considerably. I wonder if you could flash freeze it and then put it back in a low temperature oven to achieve a poor man's freeze dried effect to extend the life even longer.
I think I'll stick with the traditional recipe.
Shame we can't purchase Sailor Boy Pilot Bread here... I would purchase a couple cases in a heartbeat.

Assuming you get the moisture content low enough and vacuum pack with oxygen absorber in Mylar I would think you could get 5-10 years or more. Might depend on whether your applesauce contains sugar or not. Natural would be best. Dried apples flushed with nitrogen in #10 cans last up to 25 years...oats 30 years...interesting experiment.

It's amazing what you can find in the laundry rooms as well. More laundry detergent and bleach than you could use in a lifetime. All the things they find in guest rooms that are left behind and unclaimed usually end up there as well. Can be some amazingly useful things.
Ice machines = fresh water. Vending and soda machines on each floor.
Also, if you ask the housekeepers, they are usually happy to hand you a bunch of the mini supplies and toiletries. Every day I ask for extra shampoo, conditioner, body wash...blaming my wife and her long hair, despite the fact that my wife rarely travels with me on business and has short hair.
If the SHTF and all hell breaks loose, find one of the master keys for the room safes. Usually held by security and management. It is amazing what people put in their in-room safes (even more amazing what they leave behind...passports, money, jewelry, gold, guns, etc.).
In addition to running a restaurant, my family owned a hotel for 15+ years.

James Clavell is one of my favorite writers. We can learn a lot about the enduring human spirit from King Rat, but all great books.

I haven't read Ashfall or The Burn, but once I finish 'The Hab Theory' I'll jump into those. Always love tales of survival or 'doing it tough'. Thanks, Jo!
