I love Ed O'Neill's character on Modern Family as well.

I'm not sure these are really mistakes at all. I'm worried about rapid sea-level rise and/or major coastal flooding, in which case head for the hills is sound advice. Hunker in the bunker doesn't sound like a bad option if you are well provisioned and just hoping to outlast the first few waves of humanity...though I would prefer to have a few rural acres with a water source, cabin and supplies. Stay-at-home is my plan as long as possible - backup location is my office. The isolated homesteader sounds a bit like a dream, but would likely fail within 12-24 months with no outside contact. But how can 'a few rural acres with water source, cabin and supplies' be right when the homesteader option is a mistake...sounds contradictory.

Do you wear a pedometer, Fitbit or use the Health app on iPhone to track your steps? I started tracking religiously about 18 months ago and it makes a big difference. The average Australian only walks about 4,000 steps (3km) a day. 10,000 is recommended for good health. I've only missed 10,000 once in the last 4 months when I fell asleep putting my daughter to bed. Had a stretch when I hit 20,000 7 days in a row and I felt great...and I'm a big guy. Something to strive for at least.

Would love to stack a couple cords of wood, but it is too wet out back (even with tarps) and under the house seems like an invitation to spiders and snakes to take up residency.

Thinsulate is much less expensive and fairly light.
Goretex Windstopper is probably cheaper as well.

Eton makes good products- crank lights/radios for the Red Cross, but I haven't tried this one.
4 hrs of light in an emergency doesn't sound like much

frostbite Avatar Jun 17, 2016 at 4:58am frostbite said: My retreat sees temperatures down to -11c in winter (last weekend I had the pleasure of -7) and occasional snowfall, so I'd be keen to hear your recommendation for a lightweight, thin jacket that wouldn't take much room in a pack but could keep you warm in those lower temperatures. Thermals are too much of a hassle to take on and off in a 'tactical' environment. Hey Frostbite- apologies for the delay. My preference is layering with a light/ultralight waterproof shell like the Patagonia M10 (229g), Patagonia Torrentshell (345g) or North Face Venture Fastpack (237g). Of course, I do this with thermals (I like Baffin for boots, gloves and their Inferno long underwear) and a fleece and/or soft shell.
if you want a waterproof, wind proof and warm jacket you are better off going with a Baffin Soft Shell Hooded or North Faces Thermoball Triclimate (3-in-1). These are obviously heavier, but give you plenty of warmth. Still much lighter than anything you could buy 10-15 years ago.
My favorite socks are SmartWool. Amazing!
Most of the time when I do night snowshoeing I just wear two base layers and an oversized wool sweater. Sometimes I'll wear a soft shell pant with thermals, other times just thermals with a wind proof track pant.
Kathmandu is having a big winter sale (up to 50% off)...sure you could find something similar to what I've described above.

Water Storage/purification, Food Storage and Medicines/Medical Knowledge.
Would like to become more knowledgeable about bush survival, but the more reading I do the more convinced I am that I will die in the bush!
