have been having a look an the GT-3 seems to be the better unit overall, however the UV-5R does have a AA battery pack available that allows you to use AA batteries instead of the standard ones.
Also on the batteries, apparently all the oens labelled 2800mah are bollox and they are mislabelled from factory and are in fact the standard 1800mah

Just having a look at their web page and i must admit, I am very curious to see where this goes, I like the idea of an encrypted method of communicating and a smartphone wouldnt draw undue attention. The encryption would probably be no good against a government level monitoring situation, but against your standard joe bloggs monitoring his radio looking for easy targets it would allow more fluid and precise conversations without the risk of ruining OPSEC.
I for one think for a small group/community these could be a great replacement for handheld walkies. Another good point is that in a SHTf scenario if the mobile towers go down, there will be many more phones then there will be people to use them, so if you break or lose your phone you should be able to acquire another reasonably easily and reconnect to the same 'network'
Now if this thing was capable of transferring data I would be pre ordering a bunch right now :-P

A bag that i think would have merit would be one similar in design to the tool backpacks Something like this however a bit larger I think would make for an excellent bugout bag, especially if it can be designed with room for a bladder as well as a bunch of molle points on the outside. I have found that even the nicest hiking backpack or 72 hour bag always has that issue of having to dig through your gear to get to the bottom, now i know that we are supposed to put the most frequently used stuff on top, however I have always thought that everything in a BOB should be used frequently, the weight isnt worth carrying for occasional use. What do you guys think?

OK, so I have made a decision of sorts. I have decided to go the route of knowledge this month. I realise my FAK is woefully inadequate, but aside from the most basic first aid I sont have the knowledge to do anything else, so buying more stuff isnt going to help. I have checked out Dr Gaz's threads and chosen a few books based on his recommendations.... BUT once i got to amazon i started looking around and have now got around 20 books covering a wide reange of prepping activities.
My list is below, I will not be ordering until tomorrow night as i would love some additional discussion on books people think are worth a look.
- SAS: Survival Handbook
- Mini Farming: Self-Sufficiency on 1/4 acre
- Back to Basics: A complete guide to tradtional skills
- The Encyclodepia of Country Living
- The Survival Medicine Handbook
- Where there is no Doctor
- Basic Butchering of livestock and game
- Where there is no Dentist
- The Trapper's Bible
- Ball complete book of home preserving
- Lyman 49th Edition reloading handbook
- The ABCs of reloading: The Definitive Guide for Novice to Expert
- Reloading for Shotgunners
- Lyman Shotshell Handbook 5th Edition
- Medical dosage calculations for dummies
- IV Therapy for Dummies
- Where women have no Doctor
On top of ordering these books I will be grabbing a St Johns Off Road FAK to bulk out my basic supplies for now and continuing my food preservation.
Cheers Reth

communication is mainly going to be between me and my home as I am an onsite IT tech, but also to communicate with my father in law who works one town over and his missus who lives a few k's away from us, however I see your point about the medical.
Me and the missus both have our first aid certs but thats it, I would definitely appreciate specifics on your FAKS and trauma kits. I have been looking through a few medical supply websites and there is so much to choose from that it tends to be a bit confusing.
I will have to look for courses or information on suturing wounds and IV's and more advanced medicine as well.

Comms - I only have short range UHF walkies
FAK/Medical - Basic $30 FAK in house and cheapos in the cars
Weapons - 1.5kg powder, 2700 wads, 100 primers, 250 12ga shells, ~500 22lr
Putting it in that context, comms and medical seem to be the weakest, I will have to choose between them. hmmmm.... I have to think on this :-(

Hey austemplar, I am pretty much thinking the same for everything you have listed so far. In regards to 'weapons' I am more considering the reloading aspect for my 12ga, stocking up on primers, powder and wads. Getting my 22 ammunition up to about the 3-5k mark and same for the air rifle. Buying new strings and decent arrows for the bow and making a few shanghais (cant buy them here, but can buy the rubbers, go figure) and stocking up on either ball bearings or marbles for shanghai ammo.

OK, so September is here, the start of spring (yay), the end of AFL for the year (bigger yay!) and a new month of preps.
However I am having trouble deciding what route to take this month and am looking for ideas. I was thinking either communications, FAK or weapons. Monthly spend amount will be around the $500-$1,000 mark.
Thanks guys Reth

Hey guys,
So August is over and I am onto a new month. My food stores are looking great and I have about 10 weeks of food here including meat, and that is eating meat every day.
I havent gotten the water sorted yet but I am heading into Perth this weekend with the ute so will be picking up the blue 44 gallon drums while I am down there.
In regards to the jerky gun, i found the flat attachment useless but the round one worked fine. However!!... the gun was so flimsally made it fell apart after the first few kilos of mince. I am very dissapointed with this but I have found a fantastic alternative to using a jerky gun to make jerky with mince. I will be doing a DIY\walkthrough once I do the next batch early next week.
The round mince jerky tasted great but had a consistency similar to dry 'twiggy sticks'.
So far I am quite happy with the food stores and the water will be sorted out this week, I will be making a new post in a minute to detail this months 'plan'
Cheers Reth
