Ill look into it, I think there may be some off Monkey Mia but ill check the locations.
In regards to comms, what do you believe would be the best way for us to communicate and talk in an environment where internet is not available?

Stepford - You could always try evac drills, incorporating things like putting on masks, crawling to avoid smoke, little things that can be important but a 2 year old would still find fun, but by doing them young would instill them as second nature in the event of somethig happeig, even something as simple as a house fire or home invasion (play hide and seek with a twist)
Just some ideas anyway :-)

Stepford - the only issue i see with that is who decides the 'credit' worth of each item? That could be open to a lot of abuse as suddenly family members crops are worth a lot more then they should be

phe - i see your point, and as a backup of a backup, does have merit when taking the idea that everything else has failed into account. I guess the idea of transversing all that distance, even as a last resort, is incredibly daunting.
I do like the idea behind having a support structure, even if it is just someone on the other end of a radio letting you know there are other people who don't want to do nasty things to you in the world.
In saying that I still think developing a communication network and system would be an important first step.
- In regards to islands and what not, there are a lot of islands up north here in WA, and I imagine that there are similar formations in QLD as well, however those bloody cyclones are a pain in the ass so while the weather would probably be better for a lot of food production and the rainfall is nice and high, you could lose everything overnight because mother nature is having a bad day

i agree with wolf on the bartering system. It is brutally fair to a degree as the 'value' of items is directly proportional to the individual persons need or want for said item

- after rereading my post I just wanted to explain something, when i say we cant participate in rebuilding efforts, i mean as part of the Ausprep group, as you guys will probably want to set up shop over east, obviously we would be doing our part over here .

Personally I think a good first step would be to establish a method of communication and code of conduct.
- Define a set of 'rules' for communication. By this i mean something like "every day at 1800 all available members will meet on frequency XYZ if possible and provide code ABC for verification" Starting with something small like this would at the very least give us a basis to start a nationwide communication network, onviously this would just be the beginning but it would give us somewhere to start.
Being in WA i dont think me or other west australians would be able to effectively participate in any rebuilding efforts due to thehuge distances needed to be covered. The idea of leaving my BOL after 12 months (if i was lucky enough to survive and keep ahold of it for that long, because lets face it, in SHTF a lot of us will die) to go and look for a group of survivors 4000km away to start anew seems a touch insane :-)
What do you guys think?

that is very interesting. It is a shame, personally i would love to move to the US, even if it was only for a few years. I know that employment is an issue but my particular skillset is quite good for finding work wherever i go (as long as there are computers)

So after having a think I have decided to conentrate on my food stores and storage for the month of August.
Here are my goals for August, a bit optimistic but I may as well hit the ground running.
- Purchase vacuum sealer and plenty of bags - start dehydrating fruits and jerky again, i need to find a local source for bulk fruit but worst case scenario i wait until i head back into Perth and grab 30-40kg then. - vacuum seal or store enough food for 2 months for my family of 5, it isnt a huge amount, but the vacuum sealer will take a chunk out of this months budget
- Purchase at least 2 of those 24 packs of water per family member (10 in total) OR keep an eye out for a cheap small water tank in the local buy and sell pages.
- I am also going to try dehydrating some eggs as I have seen this done on video and i think with the vacuum sealer + silicon bags it should hold up pretty good.
That should do me for now, I will see if i have bitten off more then I can chew but for now it seems doable, just need to pry the money from Mrs Reth before she buys more useless crap!! :-)
BTW in regards to dehydrating apples, we have found they shrink considerably. On average we fit over a dozen apples into a single sandwich bag!

Hey guys, thanks for the encouragement, i will be concentrating on taking a more structured approach this time. Allocating certain amounts of money per week and prioritising based on my previous experiences.

After going through my preps today, i have realised that after moving house (and town), re-establishing my business and just a general attitude of "i;ll do it later", I am now basically back to the beginning with my preps, Aside from a couple of months worth of food, some basic FAK stuff, knives, firearms and archery equipment, I pretty much have nothing sorted out.
This is not a positive thing for me (obviously) and I am going to have to pull my head in to get back on track, the only bonus for me is that I have been learning a lot more about different skills lately and am happy that my construction and what I can only think to call "engineering" skills are a lot better then they were 6 months ago.
I will be using this thread to update everyone on my progress and would love some input on both where to start, as well as peoples opinions and ideas on what I will be moving onto at each stage.
Later today I will be posting up what I am looking to have sorted by the end of August and will be doing a month by month "plan" to try and keep my spending on unnecessary crap to a minimum
Cheers Reth

Hey Guys, I came across this in my random internet searching, it looks pretty cool and the price isnt to obscene. I won't go into the details, the FAQ on the website can explain it all better than i can. I personally like the idea, and think it would be a really good backup gennie but someone else on here may bemore familiar with the technology. Look forward to hearing what you guys think seftonmotors.com/Cheers Reth
