Found this tutorial on setting up the Baofeng UV-5R radios as a repeater. Would be hadny for boosting local communications Thats pretty clever. Set it up with a little solar battery thing and you could have a semi permanent booster

Cows are a massive issie if you are looking at smaller blocks. They take up and consume so much fodder compared to other animals it is insane. Tbh goats are the best animal for small holdings along with pigs, goats will give you milk so even if you dont eat them, you can still get milk without having to allocate up to 4-5 acres like for some cows, and if you find you have a couple goats to many, you can sell/swap/trade locally for something you do eat.
However if your heart is set on cattle i have found in my own research that the dexter is the best hands down for small holders if you want meat and milk, they are a small breed and after just rechecking wiki they get to about 450kg for bulls and 300-350kg for cows with a dress percentage of between 50 and 70%. The also produce up to 10l of milk a day, which is plenty for a calf to fill up on and for you to have enough for cheese, cream, butter etc.
We only have 5 acres and i will be looking at a dexter breeding pair once i get the clay crap here sorted out with some nice pasture and shrubs, however i will probably still need to bring in feed which is fine as i found a local bloke who will give me a good trade on a spit pig for feed

I am also looking permaculture literature. I cant afford (more time than money) to spend 2 weeks off work so study + trial and error is the way i will be going.
It seems quite a few of us are heading more into getting small acreage and using it wisely as opposed to large blocks.
Personally i think thats fantastic and it will be great to see the trials and tribulations we all face trying to maximise the productivity of smaller plots.
If you happen to come across any permaculture books or good youtube channels please put them uo here frost, i am sure a lot of us will benefit from it and i am sure we will all do the same.

Invading another country, especially an island nation like ours, takes a lot of planning and organisation. Issuing orders, moving assets, preparing a massive supply chain. None of that would go unnoticed by our intel services. We'd have time to receive material assistance from pur allies if our govt have the fortitude to act decisively. Thats the bit that will stuff us, while our government is busy with its head in the sand someone like China or Indo will just waltz in, all the while our gov issaying how it cant happen, wont happen, our allies will help etc

Hey guys,
I am not sure if you are aware but if you have a self managed super fund you are able to buy property. Now the caveats in a nutshell are tha it cannot be residential if it is to be lived in or rented by you or a family member, all property purchases are to be at 'arms length' (no buying off family or friends) and the property needs to meet the sole-purpose test of providing retirement benefits to its members.
Now with that bit out of the way, between me and Mrs Reth we have enough super to buy a very nice sized block here in the wheatbelt outright, the blocks areabout 2000 acres and are about 60% arable with the rest bushland, the arable part is the good thing as you can lease that to farmers therefore showing that it is an investment and making a return.
I was wondering if anyone here had used this method to increase their options of BOLs?

Hey Everyone,
This thread is here so I can catalogue me and Mrs Reths progress in transforming our new 5 acre place into our own little self sufficient prepper stronghold. Mrs Reth has come leaps and bounds in terms of her desire to prep and we are both keen to learn more about and start participating in food production, animal rearing, increased security of our home, more firearms practice and just general things to help us in case something goes awry in the world. Obviously our main concern in the medium term is to pay off the mortgage as quickly as possible but we do not intend to begger ourselves in the progress.
We finally have the settlement date booked as 1st Feb, the current owners are giving us permission to start work on the outside before settlement so I will be attending hopefully this weekend and getting pictures :-)
My first aim is to get a small tractor to perform the general firebreaks, cleaning as well as land preparation and the like. I have a couple to look at this weekend but wont be rushing to hard to buy one until I find the right one. 5 acres may not seem like a lot of room compared to some other BOL and retreats but we feel it is large enough for us :-)
Will update this thread as i get photos and more information and projects start. If anyone has any suggestions at any time pleae elt me know, that is half the reason I have this up as a lot of you fine people are far more experienced than I am and I am happy to take suggestions and comments on board

Sweetbread is my favorite, the pancreas or thymas of lambs or beef. We prefer the beef ones though, stick em on a bbq...yummmmm!
Mind you lambs brain is amazing if you crumb it and fry it. Then serve it with a nice soy sauce or sweet chilli sauce.
Friggin hell, my bellies rumbling now!!

Hey Guys,
just used some dehydrated, vacuum sealed mushrooms that have been in my larder for 18 months now.
I used them in a nice creamy mushroom sauce to go with some steak and cous cous. They rehydrated in a bowl of water nicely, probably to about 60-70% of normal size and 'plumpness". Cooked up in the fry pan nicely, however they did have a VERY strong earthy smell and taste, I think that it would be to strong if they werent in a sauce. Next batch of mushrooms I dehydrate I will be rinsing them extensively before dehydrating to help ease the smell.
All in all I am very happy with the results and am very happy that the mushrooms are edible after 18 months.
Cheers Reth!!

Hey joey.
Just a couple of questions mate.
1. Have you thought of sourcing the stuff yourself locally and making these your own branded mre's? There must be ways you can buy bulk dehydrated peas, corn and keep the cost at a minimum.
2. Damnit, i forgot my othet questions. Ill edit this when i remember. ....

Hey Guys, Just wondering if anyone has any experence with Kogans camping stuff? Specifically the Komodo 60L Backpack www.kogan.com/au/buy/komodo-60l-conqueror-backpack/ I do not know enough about materials etc to know if it would be any good as a GHB for the car (probably the smaller one) or even a BOB or cache bag. Cheers Reth

Can I get a vote please on what you guys think would be the biggest sellers. As I need to let the supplier know so he can quote me on the packaging labels that need to be done to comply with Aust food labeling stds.

I can't add a poll at the moment for some reason but I'm leaning towards the beef and chicken meals in 24hr packs. to keep a simple line and reduce startup costs on packaging etc

Anything with meat. We need the protein :-)
