The main angle he was suggesting past the hunting versus trapping [no idea there and we're pretty restricted on trapping here in OZ anyhow] was that tools and knowledge are more useful versus stuff. That makes sense to me. Dave's not all BS bud, though can be tricky to sort the wheat from the chaff when people have previously shown to be dishonest, which is why it was caveated.

Chinese postage can be next week, mostly about 1 month. Then there's some things that take 4-6 months to show up.

Where it would be useful I would imagine is if you set it up on a hilltop that you could 'see' and it would it allow you to 'see' to other radios on the other side as CB is line of sight. I've still not got a decent grasp on this topic to say more than that.

Specifically, have you considered these? Coupled with rechargeable AAA batteries they cut sounds over a certain DB and amplify sounds under that DB which is adjustable. Not sure if they would help your situation out or not, though it's a thought. Then there's hearing aids which have excellent technology to help you discriminate voices etc. Then there's other aids such as break-beam detectors or alarm type sensors, or noise traps that fire off blanks/shotgun primers that would be very loud alerting you to the presence of someone.

Oh no doubt I'll get there, it's only time, slow and steady has got me everything I've aimed for to day. As I said, it's inspiration. Got a later start than most for many reasons, and kicking ass now in lots of ways. Can't really aim at something you don't set your sights on, which is why it's good to get some details of such things, even if I have some slightly differing ideas in the implementation.

As my wife asked after I visited Gasman, 'Do you have prepper envy?". I do indeed, ha.. though it's more inspiration than envy, similarly here. Well done.

Treat others with kindness and respect upon meeting them. Then treat them as they treat you. Works a treat.

Give us a free unregulated market, no favored groups, no meddling by government, where anybody can fail and as history has shown us, wealth will grow exponentially. It's a simple equation with proof. Unfortunately we've got a lot of people who don't understand the basic principles that growth happens when restrictions are few, the market itself has enough of a restriction in price, quality and quantity.
Unfortunately you can't buy votes in the now for the ever increasing [socialism] slackers of the world.

Is it possible to use a smartphone without a SIM card? I've never been able to set one up without the card... Asked the wife who used to work for a certain company in communications and she doesn't think you need a sim card for set up and to quote her, 'you probably would for apple' lol. It certainly doesn't need one for my old Samsung Galaxy S2 as it turns on, is usable, can connect with wifi and so on, it just doesn't have a phone connection all without a sim or memory card.

Yeah, no smart card, no network needed, you can use wifi to update the software on the unit if you like. I've been seeing suitable phones on ebay for $90.
I would agree there's a cost comparison, but not a quality comparison. If it's the FLIR E4 that is handheld and goes for $1500US, then it's got an IR resolution of just 80×60! [4800] Versus 384 x 288 [110592], quite a difference.
There's another issue in that importation of items with more than $1000Au will bring GST. In addition to that, having someone fill out the forms for you as many do [it's probably not that hard, so could be free] costs you $250+ which is a royal scam.
In terms of night vision, and moving around and doing things, sure a head mounted NVG would be the go, this is more about spotting to which thermal is far superior [there's just no comparison] and therefore best for surveillance.

Ha, I too remember rotary dial. Android is 'one' operating system [lots of brands], which is popular on Samsung S3, S5 etc phones, on par with the iOS [operating system] which is only on iphones. This means that iphones wouldn't work for it I'm afraid.
Even though I use Android, I'd be having a separate phone anyhow so it's a system ready to go.

There's a great and extensive and long thread [lots of pics and vids] that kept me up late, demonstrating it's capabilities and it's flaws HERE. For myself it's in a price range that gets me interested, it's capabilities are excellent, far far better than the entry level Flir [$3500] in every way. There's some aftermarket software in development that pushes it further and a user group with more conversations [yet to be read] HEREScope mountingCheaper scope mountingA flip up lens cap that apparently fits.
And the recommendation from the forums is to have a dedicated phone to use it and being Android you can pick up a suitable phone for $150 or so. I'm very impressed with it, would be nice to able to get 25hz instead of 9hz, even though it works very well in a static sense and driving is ok as seen on the video above. This throws my whole budgeting for things into a quandary. It uses only 0.5W in itself and combined with extended battery and rugged case as per something like this.. had a reported battery life of 12hrs with the wifi being on [and draining it quicker] for half that time. Even during the day, the difference thermal makes to spotting critters is huge.

...in the meantime [and maybe for the rest of my life] I'm going to have a good time, enjoy my life and do some hobbies that are prepping related because they're fun.... Yep, hence my recent return to shooting and blacksmithing, if TSHTF they might be handy skills, meanwhile they are fun hobbies to no harm done either way. WRT guns, I have bought stuff that I would not have bought if my focus was 100% on prepping, in some cases my choice of calibers and guns is not the best for SHTF, but they won't be the worst either and meanwhile they good for the type of shooting I'm into right now. And the blacksmithing, well if I have to bug out I don't think the anvil will be tagging along , but if things settle down and I make it to that point it will be useful. Truth is we'll probably be having a similar conversation in 10 years I hope so. Yeah and with that experience you could use a piece of railway track as an anvil if you 'had to' right. Might not be pretty but you could make tools. Another thought I was having, if putting aside a certain amount of food and perhaps happen to have some sporting firearms and so on, shouldn't people's anxiety about things that might happen reduce? That is add peace to their lives? If it's not then I ask the question how come? Isn't the point of prepping? I live a very peaceful life, preps are one part of giving a buffer zone for the 'very small' chance of a disaster. The peace comes from giving me more time to make adjustments if such a disaster happened. If it's not doing that for you then perhaps you have other things you want to prep for as well such as prepping for your life outside of prepping. Think of it this way, prepping your mind for a disaster means also prepping yourself to be happy and peaceful in any situation, including right now.

This is what happens when you make a living from crying wolf. There is no doubt there has been turmoil in the stock market, but there hasn't been the slightest hint of that turmoil having any real impact on society. We are still in the good times Yup. I grew up with the threat of thermonuclear war and was terrified as a kid and teenager. These days I respond to what 'actually' is happening not to what people say might as nobody really knows what's going to happen very far ahead, much like the weather. Sure there's hints here and there, the debts around the world aren't a good thing, though the US has had debt for every year except for 2 since 1776. I'm both ready and not for something big and sustained and in the meantime [and maybe for the rest of my life] I'm going to have a good time, enjoy my life and do some hobbies that are prepping related because they're fun. There's no point in guessing what might be, to have 'fear porn' as you don't really prep for there never being an issue if you're doing that all of the time are you
