Are those numbers for real? A 2000k range for the F35, f me I require a 2000k range from my Landcruiser. I know time flys but didn't we just get the Collins working, why new subs. Or did the Collins subs never work? It seems to me that with such a huge country and not many people we should have forces that are capable of independant fighting a LONG way from anywhere. And we should be building stuff, refining fuel, and growing food right here in Oz, not importing it. I suppose it's cheaper to import and none of us want to pay more, but the country shouldn't be hanging on a string that can be cut at any time. I guess if the country refuses to "prep" at least we can. Collins class subs are working and there is always 2 operating in the Indian ocean at any given time The f35 is a joke but USA politics won't let us purchase what we wanted (f22) To the original topic... Australia is very hard to invade... Well its actually quite easy as some have pointed out, getting that beach head is not much at all But been able to maintain supply lines, able to combat our climate... (Australian climate is quite lethal to technology, transport etc) and the wide spaces of nothingness... We would make Vietnam look like child's play (providing the "she'll be right additude changes to get out of my country dirt bag)

DayZ was originally a arma2 mod
Been waiting for a stand alone version to come out for the PC or ps3 but haven't been overly stressed, it looks good for what it is (a free roam zombie appoc game, where everything and everyone can kill you, and you resporn with a pistol and a bandage...)
The game is appealing (oh grey I was more a duke nukem fan myself when wolfenstine came out... But killing Nazis was always fun)
Would love to see something massive and able to support a lot more people without causing issues... That would be fun in the zombie genre...
A side note there is a Aussie made zombie game series on the ps3... Very "diablo" like with game play (even tho its first person) its called dead island... Very fun, very adult...

I was lucky the chopper was refilling from my river, so was right on the scene. It's worth noting that the fire retardant they add to the water is a real bugger to get off. It came off the cabin but I can't get it off the shipping container.
Krull, we love our cabin but the design presents some difficulties, like boxing around the frame when lining the internal walls, hiding brackets and bolts, building frames around windows that are tech screwed to the external wall.
here's a pic of the guest room ready for finishing sanding and painting, showing the wood we used to enclose the steel c section frame:
How it looked before we started the internal fitout (the right hand window is the guest bedroom):
Yeah it pays to get that stuff off (its corrosive) lots and lots of water

Would not hurt for people living in rural areas to become a member of their local volunteer fire service so that if a fire does come their way they will be more knowledgeable on what to do and if you are an active member and help others in need they will, if ever your turn comes be able to help you. As nice as it is, its not for everyone

I have first hand experience of this. There was only open paddock within 100m in front of my cabin, and for over 1km north, but behind the cabin uphill the bush came within 30m of so, and south probably within 50m. I would clear more but the govt forbids it. Fire burns more slowly downhill than up, so I thought my cabin would be okay in a fire (I don't live there), especially as it is all steel and has stainless steel mesh on all the windows.
But I (and the local RFS) didn't realise how fast and how big a grass fire can get. Although they were just on the other side of the river fighting the fire, it got away form them and came within feet of my cabin. It was only the timely intervention of a helicopter water bomber that saved the day. After the fire we made a point of mowing a large section of grass all around the cabin. The positives to come out of the fire was it cleared away a lot of scrub that would otherwise have been illegal for me to clear, and it made the mrs more agreeable ot me one day installing an earth covered concrete fire/storm shelter.
Another vote for earth shelter here there was a report on one in Vic, had a fire designed house (that collapsed after a front) and withdrew to his "bunker" There are some brilliant designs out there, look in the USA market (more around California) at their ideas But to the important stuff... Those choppers are nuts... Very good asset on the ground (If your any where near qld, I can say you experienced fire behavior that the long tooth's never seen before in their lives)

Forget the ladder But in aus locals are normally encurraged to protect their own property, just remember power can fail and commit to your plan (don't go "I will defend" then evac at the 11th hour, that will get you killed) But also get to know your local bush fire fighters (by permits for burns or the PR events most run) and ask them, as different areas have different fire behavior Also the reality is, we will do all we can to protect your home but if it goes up, or your home is "too hard" to defend we will work on houses that are savable... If the defense is a fail (what we are doing is a waste, we will pull back and attempt to protect someone else's home (never been in this situation but we are trained for it) ) But all good advice (oh one side thing you don't need to walk on your roof to hose it down, you can do that on ground level)

Just a little observation...
If your looming at large blocks... Remember it has to be manageable...
10,000 acres is a massive amount of land, requiring a massive amount of work and most commercial farms have hired staff to help with the hard work...
As a bol... I can't see that size suited to most without the use if a large group...
So... To land size you only "need" roughly 10 acres per family (last I read maybe a little more) to cover the needs...
I would personally not look at large scale farms for a bol, a lol (live out life) location maybe, but I would still limit myself to around the 100 acre mark of "fertile" useable land... (No way in hell I would be able to afford it, your lookin at millions to tens of millions)
Then you have to work out what your going to use the land for?? Theres a challenge...

Have seen both although the USA one did freak my eldest daughter out more than the Uk one did. She told me I needed to buy some land straight away for a BOL. HAHA The Final Hours (Australian version) had me kicking my 7-year old daughter out of the room several times or covering her eyes due to some intimate scenes and the wild party. There was a US and UK version? Yeah it was almost a b grade porno... The world is ending let's party!! Or suicide!! Or screw!!

China has been a superpower for decades...
Its even a space fairing power, with a moon mission under its belt
Stealth tech is stollen from a f117A shot down (can't remember where)
But nice article...
Don't forget China is now in production of its first truly Chinese air craft carrier (not the the refurbished Russian one, its officially in service)
China is China... Its no USSR.. And no Russia
There is also 2 more emerging super powers... That seem to stay under the radar... India and Pakistan... Maybe because they don't need to click their fingers to end our way of life (using so many ways its hard to keep up, economic, nuclear, starvation)

Oh make a hard one...
Early stages the "group" is purely safety in numbers...
So knowing its my car I have a base level of supplies to keep me going (I'm on my own and out of state so alien territory)
So... What next... First important thing is establish what is the cause, and confirm... (So check a few items to see if burnt out) knowledge beats speculation (and remember the damage from a emp is like a full overload on all electronic devices... Only going all as staying with scenario)
Now noticing the "refugees" I'm best off acting like a sheep, grab what I have, and join the heard...
This point my pirioty is to befriend a family, preferred young/confused hopefully non drug issues and with a bigger bonus a local
At this point my role changes to use numbers to survive, hopefully keep a win win
So that's established what's my mission... To get home...
What's the mission for this family... Keep them alive, teach them basic skills to survive and make sure they understand its a relationship of convenience...
To trust... There will be none To longevity to the relationship... Min to none...
Unfortunately they would use me as much as I use them...
Lone wolf style in this situation will be noticed and be more risk than its worth

Fractus...
Can't argue the scenario... Apart from the rapid devaluation of resources (maybe a game to destroy Russia... Idk)
But it is possible...
So gov has released publicly... Oh no we only have enough oil for xyz weeks?? Or is about to??
To the part one, very important I have a solid weeks warning its about to go down...
So what do I do?? First with help work out how to gain access to my super (takes a few weeks I'm told) as it will be worth nothing when this shortage goes into full effect
Now what?? Well I need to focus and go "into shtf mode'
Knowing what a shortage will do to prices, get a small stockpile happening, a full tank of gas + half in reserve
Get more extra food stocks (thanks aldi)
Do a shop around for a bol (yes why super is emptied)
Get all kits out and brief family on what's going on
As this week warning has been 100% confirmed by sources
Make sure briefing is 100% acknowledged
Get all items for bugging out in even better order, run practice drills to load car... In dark... With no light....
(This is copied from my previous response... I still stand by it till episode 2)..

Tax on oil is a set price not a % Something like 4 or 5 cents... But it will always be worth the shipping costs both in drop of price or massive inflated prices, as its a very large market here and people pay those shipping costs even today The overseas refineries would actually force costs lower, as the cost of the process is less... But what to watch out for are those sneaky import tariffs... (What government double dipping who would have thought ) The bigger concern from this post is not the cost or availability (As in raw material)... But logistical failures caused by war, nature or internal issues triggering a fuel shortage here and causing massively inflated prices that will cripple australia

Could be the new ceo's have been watching doomsday peppers and thought those nuts are onto something But yes a financial collapse is nothing more than a minor trigger away... (Including but not limited to a major natural disaster) I wouldn't read too deep into it as we are a major flavor of these modern times (how dose it feel to be popular ) and doesn't change what we do as we all know its a possibility (great depression) Good to see more of this way of thinking in the mainstream...

Close enough... Happy new years (You will pick up the pattern sooner or later, but I strongly suggest to find his blog if you haven't already... i swear its the shtf school or shtf survival school or something like that.. Its been a while) Oh I hope you have read year of hell... Its worth while (take close to a hour decyphering the questions and responses) that's a very good read... (Factual and purely from experience.. Almost like before getting corrupted by forums) and you will see his primary focus and where I gained respect for him...
