Well I figure that the bag will be in my car most of the time, which is our primary family car. So should something happen while we are all in the car, at least I have stuff to help with us all (admittedly very short term). And with kids, there is always something - things like sunscreen, insect repellent and spare water always comes in handy.
Even if I am stuck with a broken down car, at least I have something with me if I need it
The bag is heavy, so will start taking it with me on daily walks I think.

I don't need a ghb, worse case I'm a day away (walk from home)
But I have a little kit in the car, that is focused more around a edc (and needs a few additions)
But it has the ability to make fire (ferrite rod + fire starters) A small folding knife
Adding a mini bic and a arrow head soon and a mini fishing kit
Also keep a few small water bottles in the car that are swapped out often...
But I'm lucky to be further than 30km from safety (my home, olds, olds in law..) So unless its so bad it wipes my home from existence (I'm far outside any nuke targets) I am light and able to get home with no real issues
If I have to travel much further a bag is better suited but knowing me it will be a thin vest, and a long jumper or something, (even a old long work shirt) as the goal to get home is number one in phase 1 of planning... And traveling as light as possible works for me in this area

I agree with Phen. If its gonna be a travelling load, no point being too heavy. Also if its gonna be in a car, avoid PET bottles. It will deteriote over time. I had a green plastic bottle change shape coz I left it in the car. If you really want to, try them steel canteens like KLEAN CANTEEN (I don't work for them, I just own a few of them bottles), with Life Straws. I reckon I will bring a couple of homemade filters as well, which would do well if I need to boil water in my metal canteen. For a 30-40km walk, I would go for the large 1.4L metal canteen and supplement it with a life straw. my 2 cents

beckles Yours is very similar to mine! This is what I have on me any time I leave town. I do plan to add to it, in particular one of those window breaker things for when I'm on the train.

Nex Socius, i have a folding pocketknife, made by Buffalo River (available at most gun stores) that is just awesome. Ridiculously sharp, can be opened and closed single handedly PLUS has a seat belt cutter and glass breaker. I Paid about $60 from memory. (sorry for the bad pic)

I probably should have mentioned that when I said the bag was heavy, it's heavy for me, who is rather unfit at the moment (another thing to work on!)

Like the idea of the glass breaker on the handle of the knife. Haven't seen that before

I have been on public transport for nearly seven years and it can get interesting at times. Anything from stuck in the middle of nowhere for a couple of hours, delays from storms, delays from heat, delays from drunks and general d***heads. Don't have anything to special in my work bag - Panadol, sudafed, water, a snack of some sort (beek jerky etc), MP3 player and tablet computer for entertainment and usually a magazine or two. Also a lightweight rain jacket that rolls up pretty small and a multi-tool

I,ve also been public transporting and shanks pony for majority of my life and i rekon it makes you very prepared for general stuff.people in general.its usually pretty mundane and boring but some public transport trips are waaaaaay better than the Tele.today i travelled over 200 kms on pt.cost me....less than 6$.so definitely cost effective.does kill anything else you might have planned for the day.as for getting around stuff, its water(1.25)protien shake (unmade)apple, muselibar of choice and if i,m gonna train at a bus stop i,ll take pre packed meal.usually last nights.always have bandaids x6 Panadol x 6 knapkins and kfc wet wipes, big trips like that i always take phone charging unit and earphones.Always carry two folded down comes carry bags.do that in all my bags but that's because without the fridge i usually do the shopping on the way home.public transport is one of the best ways to know a countries real peoples.plus like i said its wildly entertaining at times.I shall be doing that mega trekk again tommorrow then some.still love the country though.

I nearly bought one of those yesterday.its got that no country for old men thing going on.is that how it works?cause i,v put alot of parts through alot of windows and ive come off second best EVERY TIME.and not band aid second best a couple of trauma kit second bests.so i,d be a bit dubious of being that close to the shattering glass.the claw hammer behind the seats a safer a option i feel.good multi tool too.just seems a bit small unless it does pop out hard and fast.has anyone got a u tube link thingy.i gotta work out how to do that.sorry guts/gals everytime i try to add a link i just paste it.lol.

Nex, sorry for being such a puritan but I'd go for a AA or AAA torch. There are some good ones which can be found on DX.com and they ship free to Oz. The Tank007 AAA torch comes to mind. I gave one to happygolucky and he's loving it. Its my casual flash light which I put into my handphone pouch. Check out the flash lights at DX, inexpensive just takes a heck of a long time to arrive... haha ... a 10 AUD AA or AAA with at least 100lumens would be sufficient.
