I just have a generic, fairly cheap multi-tool and that does the job for me. Would like a leatherman, but at the moment just couldn't justify the cost as I have lost a couple already haha

For the price of 1 good tool, you can get 10-15 China-crap. Good for trading and not only that, if your companion needs to borrow a muti-tool, you give that person the china-crap. I have both. One is a Coleman multi-tool while I have a bunch of China-crap which aren't too bad.

You are of course right, if you have ten cheap crap ones, and for whatever reason, it breaks, you lose it or it is stolen or taken from you by force. You can just go back to your stocks, grab another one and life is good again. one is none, two is one and ten is bordering having enough?

In terms of getting home, quite a few suggestions probably won't help you get home asap. When I was at uni, sometimes is drive and other times I'd catch the train or tram. The only food I ever took was a muesli bar if I got hungry in the middle of a lecture.
This is just my opinion but ghb/edc should be kept to the minimum possible to ensure you take it everywhere, all the time. Food, three torches and half a hospital of medical gear will slow you down. If you can travel the distance home plus 20% for detours without stopping, all you want is enough water, a cap, knife or good multitool, tiny torch or headlamp, and a 4in Israeli trauma dressing.
Anything that needs less than a 4inch izzy and you can make it home without treatment and anything that needs more and if you can't call ambulance then you'll probably die anyway.

There are many things where cheap is just as good as expensive. Multitools is not one of those things. Go leatherman, Gerber or swisstool

Go leatherman, Gerber or swisstool yeah unlike with knives there just doesn't seem to be midrange but still really well put together products in the multi tool line.I,ve been looking flat out.Has anyone tried the mini gerbers that go for about 50.Its the screwdrivers and plier system that I,m after.alot of it seems a bit overkill.I could never understand those tiny scissors.they cool and all but what can you cut with those successfully that you cant do with your knife? Also whys everything still got a flippin bottle opener on it.The multitools a strange one for me.but any tool is definatly worth its weight.I,ll get the brand name and see if I can get any feedback on those 25 ish ones.

Is this the one you are after hago? au.gerbergear.com/Survival/Tools/Survival-Series-Compact-Multi-Tool_31-000750I got this one 2nd hand off gumtree - it's SO tiny so it lives in my hand bag and I don't even notice it. I haven't tried anything special with it yet, just used the knife. It seems like a well put together little tool.

knives are a funny topic. Ive seen people pays hundreds for a knife and others only buy cheap, with the cheap lasting just as long.
Multi tools i think you really need to spend the $$ on. Ive got about 5 cheapies rattling around the house that i wouldnt take beyond the front gate. My Gerber Multi tool goes everywhere with me. Its rock solid and i would happily put it side by side with a Leatherman or the likes.

I'm with you on this, I love my leatherman and honestly for a multi tool I think you should spend decent dollars and get something worth having But I also think it's crazy not to have cheap ones too. If I lost my leatherman post SHTF I would probably cry if I didn't have three or four cheap ones kicking around somewhere.

A cheap multi-tool will let you down when you most need it to be reliable. Even the cheaper Leatherman models will be a better bet than some no name item. I have multiple Leatherman tools. My EDC is the Charge TTi (lower left), which I got a great price on from ebay in the US. My Wave (not pictured) lives in the ute. I have a Surge (top left) in the pouch of my main knife sheath. My 'cheap' backup is the Wingman (lower right), and these can be had from Masters (and Bunnings I think) for around $45. For a basic multi-tool it's very hard to go past. There are also smaller Leatherman models. I have the Juice S2 (orange) and Squirt PS4 (blue), and they are both great. The only other brands I would even give the time of day to are Gerber (one thing they do seem to do well is multi-tools) and SOG.

They aren't all bad, I was gifted a great multitool that was no name and bought a Winchester one for under $50 both are in my opinion "Cheap" for a multitool especially the gifted one but they are decent as a backup. Now I have a really crap one that would make a better fishing sinker than anything else, I was also gifted that, but it still works so it stays. I 100% agree if your relying on it as a EDC multitool you are kidding yourself if you think the $10 el cheapo from bargains galore will be your best mate hanging on your belt, I was a leatherman fan from a very young age when I was gifted one from my older sisters. Probably the best gift I've ever received.

I have LM wave, surge, fuse, skeletool and s2 juice. So I'm biased, I love leatherman. However I've used Gerbers and Swisstools... sharing is caring.
However, on a chinese-cheapo brand one, in one week, I twisted the plier heads, snapped the tip of the knife blade, bent a screwdriver (admittedly I was using it as a prying tool) and got a sore hand from using it. That sumbich was uncomfortable to use.

I agree that everyone should have at least one high quality multitool. If you have ever broken one during use you know that it can be a painful experience. I carry a leatherman wave in a belt sheath that holds a few extras as well. The tool, bit kit with the most common bits for my area, a small pry bar and a bit extender that accepts all bits- not just the flat leatherman ones. It's like a mini tool kit on my belt. The sheath also has a loop for a firesteel, pen, lanyard, etc. Attachments:

As for my ghb it is geared towards making a 25 mile hike home from work through the rural east Texas piney woods. It has fire, water, food, shelter and security covered. The weight without full water bladder and containers is under 20 pounds. I took an ultralight approach for it. I am estimating 3 days or less for the hike home. My routes home all have plenty of water to be processed and I can top off my 2 liter bladder and 2 1 liter nalgenes from my pickup on the way out. This is assuming an emp event where the truck will be out of commission. I hope for the best but plan for the worst.

In a get out of a city scenario, I would prefer to go light to get home! Depending on what SHTF... Water,food,raincoat/poncho, light 360lumen torch, small FAK and a weapon of some sort!(knife or Baton or both,or a pry-bar, home made pepper spray, I would never carry a can of oven cleaner, that would be illegal... ) Joggers and socks and warm jacket!
