ooooh, just though of a really decent island over here in WA.... Rottnest!
It already has infrastructure, no permanent residents, everyone who lives there is basically a temp worker who comes in for their shifts and heads back to Perth after their shifts.
The only issue I can see if fresh water, however with a little ingenuity that couldbe resolved via rain water catchment or large scale boilers or something like that.
The idea of an island that already has infrastructure is very enticing andit is only 19km from the shore, which is far enough awa to deter most people but close enough that it can be done in fine weather on a small boat (there is a swimming race every year to actually swim from Perth to Rottnest)
What do you guys think?

And it has the cutest wildlife (well for a while anyway ) What about the 1 million Perth residents with boats?

this theoretical plan Z would be well after everything has gone to shit and we are at the rebuild stage a year or more later, by all accounts a lot of people wouldve fallen on the perch by then, and the ones with boats would find it difficult to get water and food (aside from meat/fish) without prior knowledge and preperations.

Even if all million survive (in Perth, highly unlikely) there in "best case" 30,000 craft capable of making it to a "off shore island" and then the thought "oh there is a island at xyz, with no real resources to salvage, let's check it out!!" Has to come to mind... That's another reason in infrastructure I suggested a maintainabe navy But every suggestion is a good one on this topic

Looking at Rottnest it has a hotel, golf course, and has a little bit of a high danger level to get to (both land and sea you pass very close to populated areas) and been a tourist attraction a good "salvage" location for a scout team after the basics of that "sliver" island are sorted maybe??

I didnt see the post about a sustainable navy, ill have a look now, i must admit, biodiesel production is a massive part of me 'plans' for my BOL, we (my family and father in laws) are looking at buying 100 acres or so and would like to grow something that will provide a decent amount of vegetable oil, so far jojoba is the best looking,
but im derailing the thread....my bad!

There is one called "plan z infrastructure"
Navy wise, a few concepts i have but will make a new topic based on individual infrastructure concepts (going to try as a week to week topic focus as its sparked a few ideas, first one will be trade, and another for security as both topics have sparked lots of intrest)

Looking with Google maps, found another possible islands (this doesn't mean that island is the only way, just the "lazy" solution)
St francis island (near sa, its green??)
Different shape, but has a sheltered looking bay, temp ranges would be interesting?? I think it may simply be too cold for us, but green = fresh water from somewhere, a possible, but not sure...
The dorrie lsland option still ticks a lot of boxes for me, but looks super hot...
Don't want to go further north, simply due to cyclone risk (put so much work into setting up the infrastructure, just for mother nature to say FU)

idk, im thinking perhaps 1 main community is just not feasible? maybe 1 east coast, 1 west coast instead?

Wolfie I see your point, but love more possible locations to play with, the idea is to be a place hard to get to, where even slavery almost seems like a better option...
Its just a "final" plan option, tbh most of us prob will dismiss it until all other locations are just too dangerous to be remaining in, but any options for a location you cab add would be welcomed (the island group "st Francis" has a better central feel...
Its worth playing with , but lucky to have around 1500 people, makes 2 locations difficult, but expansion may be another topic worth taking about??

just thinking that if there are 2, if one gets attacked they can fall back to the secondary of need be, or if there is an outbreak of something etc, only half of the community is at risk not one. sort of like the old "dont put all your eggs in one basket" if you will, you know? plus its more achievable for the people who are farthest from the other end of Aus

Exactly Wolfie, problem is, when/if we actually decide plan z is the way to go, it will be a very slow trickle of "survivors" to the location, we split it into 2 islands at different locations, the slow trickle may become almost non existent... But expansion will be a great way to provide 2 communities, (reduse risk) but even in one island, we will be spread out over theiIsland (if the wa one turns out to be the location, would spread over those 2 islands) as with all that space, there is no need to live in each others back pocket
