now my beautiful XM15 looks destined for gun confiscations I have been thinking on what are nice multi-purpose - farm and hunting - bolt action centre fire rifles.
or semi-autos with internal 5 round magazines.
any thoughts from the assembled crowd?

I like my Savage Axis. Cheap, light and accurate.

What is your max budget?
Are you a short range ambush hunter or long range shooter?
You want to run with .223 or consider other calibres?

Well I have how shall we say... already have an excess of .223 ammo, so probably .223 - but willing to explore. <$2k More an ambush hunter. Mostly deer and goats from within 50ms. The odd longer shot. But also have small farm - so pests and the odd stock execution for food or due to injury.

My preferred BA these days is a Sako 85. A very smooth action and lovely factory trigger straight out of the box.
During my desert living years my trusty 'every day' BA was a Ruger M77 II. Got it new in 1991 and it's still shooting well. Has a very heavy trigger out of the box.

I like wood and craftsmanship, like CZ 527 varmint.
Another option is the Mossberg MVP that can take 223 & the NATO 5.56. It is Kind of a prepper item as it is able to take the standard military round. In time of ammo shortages might be more available - it is kind of crazy but since you are on a prepper site, had to put it out there, as I have seriously considered getting one myself.

Norseman's A1A m10 in 7.62 x 39. Takes AK mags. modernfirearms.net/en/civilian-rifles/argentina-civilian-rifles/aia-m10-eng/As tough as an Ukrainian mother-in-law, this one has taken plenty of game at Camp Carnage. Just have to remember that Chinese milsurp fmj's tend to come back at you when shooting steel plates. Incoming!! I saw a goat dispatched and field dressed with one chest shot with this rifle. Seriously, when we got to it the goat was dead, on my dam wall, with it's insides neatly piled beside it's body. There wasn't even that big an exit hole. Amazing.

That's an AIA M10 in 7.62x39 with a Red Dot and spraycan job. It's the fastest thing you'll get in a Bolt Action, almost like a semi auto in the right hands! Says in best Mexican accent "We don't need no steenkin semi-auto!" Bloody awesome on feral pigs I know that much! If you spraycan them green and then put brown camo over the top it makes them go faster! Just ask the Police Minister, Police Commissioner or Attorney General regarding "Appearance Laws", they will tell you spraying em green makes them "more dangerous"!........... Could only happen in Australia now a land of absolute mediocrity! So that's why we are emigrating to a property in freedom loving Russia! Our village is going to be called "Little Rhodesia" and are currently accepting applications, it doesn't matter what color your skin is, or your religion, or your sexual preferences all are welcome on our voortrekker pilgrimage to a true democracy! There are only two rules: 1) If you have sex with boy goats you are not welcome (girl goats are your business)! 2) If you vote Greens then you are definitely not welcome, even our group needs a minimal entry standard! Discounts will be offered to paid up members of Fraser Anning's Conservative National Party! Group departure will occur shortly after the Federal Election, however this will be rapidly expedited should a Labor / Green Government be elected.

I'm leaning towards the Mossberg MVP Scout .308 as a practical, carry around in the scrub kind of pig solution. My only concerns are whether its accuracy and quality up to standard.

They reckon the bolts need a bit of working in / cycling to get them really slick, the mags are also cheaper than the Ruger Scout mags which is another big plus! Get a Red Dot on it and an Olive Drab / brown spray can or two so it runs faster!

Interesting, I was not familiar with them. I just bought an SMLE chambered in 762x39, not something that was on my radar but I got it so cheap I couldn't resist. As the round is physically similar to 300BLK this gun scratched the Blackout itch I've had for a while
