Got my new carbine in .44 Mag. Wasn't really happy with shot placement at 100m using a red dot so I added a vortex PST II 1-6x24 LPVO and an Olight. It weighs a bit more but still a light rig overall. 9 rds and 16.5" barrel is sweet. milspec Thought this may interest you given your recent acquisition! It's only been up a few days.

Noice! Noice! Very Noice! +++ Yes.. Looks nice... Details... I need details.. Home built ?? Custom built for you ?? Purchased ?? where ?? Brand name ?? What action ?? Looks to be M70 Win ?? What caliber ?? Where did the mag well trigger guard come from ?? What magazine ?? Custom made or purchased peep site on the rear scope base ?? Tim It's not mine I think from memory it might be a Brockman Custom in 308 belongs to a guy in the US. I'll go find it if I can.

norseman, thanks for the review link. For some reason there arent a lot of reviews of the .44 @spinifex yes I'm very happy with the build quality with one exception. The back edge of the bolt was very sharp. 5 mins with a nail file had it rounded off nicely. overall fit and finish is very good. Cycling the action is smooth and positive.

Darn. Tried an upload but no dice. I'll try again when/if forum gets attachment space.
Now I've compared more closely, it looks like the stainless version shows machining marks even more than what is in mine.
This what happens when one is raised on the older German and Scandinavian equipment ... or even the pre 80's American stuff ... new stuff looks rough. I had a pic of the inside of my Sako 308 receiver for comparison. It's super smooth. But we'd expect that given the price we pay for them.
Happily the Marlin works well. Mine has done plenty of work and never missed a beat. There is a spot on the cam on the lever that benefits from a tiny amount of tidy-up with very fine emery. It stops a later jamming problem from developing ... so they say.

Nice picture! Nice Rifle! +++ VERY NICE.... This is kinda, sorta what I have envisioned as a budget, DIY, you name it Scout.. M 24-47-48 Yugo or other mid length large ring Mauser.. Military bolt head.. That is OK.. The iron sights are ideal for my aging eye sight.. The scout scope mounts look great.. An upgraded trigger, some stock bedding and you are good to go.. I would go for an 18.... maybe a 20" barrel.. Just being old school, 16.3" is just a bit too little.. My Husqvarna carbine is 20" and plenty short as is.. But then it is a 30-06.... Only other thing I might do is add another front sling mount for a short leg bi pod.. Or maybe a sling mount on the left side of the stock front.. And maybe a pistol grip or front of the mag floor plate sling swivel mount.. A simple 1" nylon strap sling is OK as it doesn't have to be fancy or complex.. But a way to sling and to carry with both hands free is priceless at moments.. VERY GOOD JOB.. Just as it is... My 5 cents of opinion.. - - - - - - - - - DOH..... Forgot to mention, re barrel to 308 Win, of course... (slap forehead)

30-06 in lightweight rifles like these would be a handful! +++ Yes.. The carbine is a brute.. I have always liked the European, especially norther Europe or Scandinavia style stocks as for me, easier to use and more comfortable to shoot.. But the carbine is harsh, even at 8 lbs.. My US 1917 Enfield, at 9 1/2 lb and 26" barrel is much tamer, even with the fits everyone military stock.. - - - - - - Another note... I have read some reviews of Czech, Yugo Mausers being made into budget Scout rifles, and left in 8mm caliber.. Them saying they perform well as any 308 Win Scout, except for ammo availability.. But then, 8mm is much more available in some other parts of the world...

OK.
Whats with the sighting configuration on that gun? What is the point of having the optical tube so far forward?
Surely all that does is create an optic with a tiny field of view? What is that meant to be good for?

What is that meant to be good for? Actually the field of view is greatly enhanced but not by the scope. when you see something then the scope is used but you still have mega peripheral vision from your eyes for fast acquisition of other targets. I use an eotech in a similar position on my remy 308 pumpy. Norseman might be better able to explain why he does it but that’s what i do.

Righto. Thanks for the enlightenment
When I want wide field of vision for quick acquisition of moving targets I'm shooting lots of big-ish things at very close range. Open sights, or even just looking down the barrel shotgun style without a lot of fine aim works well for me in that context. At slightly longer ranges I use a low powered scope mounted normally.
I'll have to try a carbine set up like that one day to see how it goes.

1-6X24 LPVO on the normal receiver mount ... Both eyes open and all the FOV you need for anything close then crank it up to 6x if you've got something distant to take down.

On the subject of nice bolt actions I cant believe I'm sitting here on the gun at near 10pm at the end of Dec in a down jacket and scarf waiting for a fox. So much for global warming.
On a related subject I shot a couple of young bunnies for the dogs this afternoon, the liver of one of them was riddled with white lumps despite being a young bunny, hence I discarded them. It reminds me that experience hunting and recognising such issues is a valuable thing. If a post Shtf non hunter had somehow managed to catch that bunny and consumed it, their future wouldn't have been healthy.

What is that meant to be good for? It's the "old" Scout Scope configuration usually a 1x , 2x or 2.5x fixed power extended eye relief scope which with the widespread use / development of Red Dots etc has pretty much made them obsolete, although many "Scout Rifle" purists will seriously call me out on this! I tried it extensively and didn't like it, you do shoot both eyes open and it works well for some but not others. I did mount a 1x power Burris Scout Scope on my rifle in conventional position and it was very fast to bring on target and more accurate than iron sights, at close range put the target in the center of the tube and fire! Awesome for knocking running ferals! This one was the inspiration for my latest build:- VS - Wider field of view, faster target acquisition, single round / stripper clip loading clearance, ease of carrying in the hand etc etc are all touted as a big plus with this system.
