If this kicks off in the next couple of years it will be before Australia is in a position to protect it’s shipping lanes. Expect shortages of everything, initially from the stampede when the sheep realise what’s happening, and then continuing shortages from a lack of imports.

Whatcu mean shortages in the future ? Try and buy irrigation gear, firtaliser and so on. Prices are double last yer, if you can get it and 6 months wait.
Were screwed already people, stock up on food and seeds. You have been warned.

Things might be tougher in your area MWT. Recently I advertised a slasher that was no longer needed on our farm and we had three enquiries from Northern Rivers folks. They all baulked at the freight costs to get it up there. A guy from Goondiwindi ended up buying it and when he got down here he wanted to buy just about everything on the farm!
People aren't keeping stock like they used to but it only seems to be a few days away - ie stocked in Melbourne.

Like the great Hyundai oil filter shortage. Lengthy back order for MWAT, full shelves of them in my local auto parts store. Same same .22ammo, MWAT can’t get any at the same time my local has pallets of it. If you gonna bug out early you need your supply line sorted. Like my son, he moved to rural southern NSW for a better lifestyle, local shop got none of the .22 projectiles he needs, but he’s got a supply line (me) in place sending him stuff sourced in Sydney.

We upgraded the wood fires in a couple of houses, the old (less than 12 months) pot belly's had dozens of inquiries for them and a chap from Stanthorp bought the big one and from Lismore bought the small one, same day !! Still getting inquiries a week later !
22 ammo now in good supply, putting in an order for several thousand rounds, no need to deplete the stock in the shop, I have several thousand rounds anyway i stock here, so no hurry.
I am in shape, rounds a shape isnt it ?

One of the biggest disadvantages of rural life. Sure, you're away from everyone else. But therein lies the problem, you're also away from everyTHING else. Things that we used to find easy to get are now not so easy. We used to get a specific brand of shoes for the smallest sprout because they're designed specifically to take the abuse of young kids. You're far more likely as a kid to grow out of them than destroy them. Cost a bit more, but worth it to only have to upgrade because of a size issue and not because they just fell apart after 6 months.
Can't get 'em here. You have to order online which is sketchy if you don't know their current size in that brand. Obviously you can mail them back and have them exchanged but the reality is that everything is that little bit harder. And that's just for shoes. Choices are far more limited because there's a lot less brands available in general of all sorts of things. I already knew that would be the case but you never know what's going to be limited choice until you go looking for it.
It's going to be far worse if SHTF in shipping/transport. Might be worth starting a "What do you need" thread so that we can network getting items to each other if that happens. I know there's quite a few secondary industry things that would probably be easier for me to source over here and send over if someone needed it and couldn't get it locally.

Good points, but a large Wollies, Coles, and numerous shops, doctors etc, are only 50 mins or so drive away. And being such a distance away encourages you to do a list of whats needed every week and stick to it. Yes, its inconvenient to need something and its not local, but the local Rural Agents is only 15 minutes down the road, yes, prices are higher, but we accept that as part of the price for being out here. There is a reasonably well stocked general store there, a Post Office, Churches, Police and Fire Stations, Infants/Primary School, (The school bus passes our front gate), a pub and the Rural Agents sell petrol and diesel as well as fencing supplies, common pipe fittings, screws and so on.
The price difference is more than made up by not having to run to town and use all that petrol getting something.
We are lucky our kids were all home schooled, with an occasional trip to the Center in town to pick up or hand in work. The youngest is still going once a week, and that becomes the town day for us.
There is a large organic feed mill 5 minutes away, the tip 10 minutes away, a major hospital 20 minutes away, with a Doctor who was the top skin cancer specialist in Sydney till he decided he and his family had had enough. No waiting, no appointments needed for small things, and a Chemist adjacent.
Give me the country life any time, less stress, less noise, pollution and so on. Internet is expensive through the satellite, but just as quick as town, perhaps better in some ways.
Ive seen the evidence for, I want to see other evidence.

Interestingly there's a lot of noise today about Blinken saying that the US doesn't support Taiwan independence... And the next part of that comment(which they're all conveniently leaving out) was "we remain opposed to any unilateral changes to the status quo by either side". So standard ambiguity comments there. The full video is hereIt's interesting how everyone's reporting it as America backing down, but this sounds almost like every other official statement they've made on the subject for the last I don't know how long. Non-committal, we will ensure Taiwan can defend itself. Unfortunately the clip doesn't continue for the rest of the statement although I'm sure it's floating around.

I read that China has half as many 5 year olds as they do 15 year olds. their population has collapsed and is aging very fast.
Xi is a scary prospect, it may be a factor in making moves to try and hold power. possibly ultra nationalist moves.

China is working hard to get foreign Chinese bases set up around the world. www.theglobeandmail.com/world/article-china-military-expansion-abroad/In June of last year, to the sounds of a brass band and under the flags of Cambodia and China, military officials from both countries broke ground on an expansion to a naval base in Ream, a port town on the Gulf of Thailand, about 175 kilometres from the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. While China and Cambodia said the new facilities would be used for joint exercises, U.S. officials claimed the project was cover for an expansion of the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) overseas footprint. It will see China’s navy get exclusive access to the port and a foothold in the western reaches of the South China Sea, almost all of which China claims as its territory. China digging its claws into Singapore as well to stoke the large population of Chinese living there into coming back into the fold www.washingtonpost.com/world/interactive/2023/singapore-china-news-influence-lianhe-zaobao/

I keep coming back to the 2027 date. For various reasons but not least because that's when Pooh Bear has said he wants his troops ready. When I think on our future plans a lot of it is based on being as self sufficient as possible by Jan 27. After that whatever happens, we're in a better position than before. So many of the documentaries I've seen about wars have said that people in the country almost always fare better than those in the cities. We're definitely not in the city now! But our plans to move further out have us out of this house and on something arable in a year to two years time because we'll need a couple of years of growing behind us if we're to be even close to ready for a huge war to pop off in our region.
