Has anyone given any thought to after the collapse, how to remain under the bad guys radar ?
Several things come to mind, maintaining a good light discipline at night, shielding your lights with curtains, and using a horizontal slit on your torch when checking animals at night, like the WW2 car headlights were shielded.
What about noise discipline ?
Its all well and good having a generator and the fuel to power it, but even a so called 'silenced' set is still noisy and can be heard from quite a distance away. After TSHTF, the bad guys, and gals, will be looking for targets, like preppers, to rob to survive. Having a generator running in such circumstances makes you a target.
Solutions....Solar is silent, battery's are almost silent, also, don't forget to disable the alarms on your inverter or regulator units, as that will draw attention to yourself.
2 stroke engines are probably the worst for noise generation. Collecting firewood needs a saw. The battery electric chainsaws now are pretty good, and can be charged from your solar system, silently. Same type of saw is what we use when quartering a beast on butchering day. An electric saw bench is quieter than a chainsaw, but still can be noisy.
A 240 v electric chainsaw is a good investment, not quite silent, but no motor noise to attract attention when breaking down a log at home. It also will run from a properly designed solar power system.
Dogs, train your dog to be silent on command as a dogs bark carry's for miles on a still night.
You cant do much about animals making noise, but usually somethings wrong if they are carrying on after dark, like lambs that have lost their mothers in the dark. Don't forget the slit torch.
Contrary to popular opinion, sound attenuaters are not illegal on rifles. But, the rifle must have the appropriate threaded barrel, and be registered as a attenuated rifle. The difference is amazing. A so called 'silenced' 22 emits a pop when fired as opposed to a sharp crack in standard form.
Not much can be done with a tractor hoeing, but a good muffler will help, as will keeping the oil up to the right level and replacing whining bearings or gears as required.
For 'spying' on the environment, a super ear or amplified parabolic reflector is advised. Sounds that were not audible from far away are suddenly next to you. The effect is quite startling if you've never used one before. Several designs have been published and a large mixing bowl makes a reasonable parabolic reflector. A small electret microphone placed at the focal point and fed into a low noise amplifier and a set of sensitive ear/head phones complete the package.
Anyway, any thoughts people ? We are all in this together now.
I remember when Saturn's were rockets, not cars.

My retreat is located where there are no public roads or neighbours close by. The cabin is at the end of several km of private track. We are in a valley, surrounded by hills. I don't think anyone is going to see or hear us unless they are snooping a long way from town.
And if they do, well then they can deal with the consequences. Good luck trying to sneak up on my thermal unit.

It's worth noting sounds and lights aren't the only things that will give you away quicker than a fart in an elevator and much like in that scenario smells can give you away just as quickly. If not more so. Wood smoke indicates that someone has warmth and probably supplies. Cooking smells can draw a crowd from a mile away if the wind is blowing right and you're a good cook.

Stealth might mean a return to a somewhat primitive and maybe nomadic life if the "bad guy" surpasses the "good guy". Too many what ifs in this kind of scenario, but lets say an invasion by a foreign force is the agenda, then you would have to try and determine if you are able to defend your location or do you "run to the hills" for example.

Grey man.....
There are likely a million articles written saying "do this" ... "don't do that"... All from the prospective of a million people, all with different conditions to work with...
What works well for your mate a block down the street, may not work for you.. There seems a growing trend to fort up in place ...the term being to "Alamo" from the famous fort in Texas, US, history.... Here in our bush, at my age, and all considered to "Alamo" is our best option....
When out in public.. An old guy isn't an obvious threat, and not that good a target when obviously aware, looking around and not afraid to administer a crack across the eyes and nose or throat with a sturdy cane..

Be it now or when the zombies come, you aren’t special. To some degree we will all need to be able to live our lives and unless your interpretation of SHTF is some mad max fantasy where all current social standard are just gone for some reason then I think just basic shit will do a lot of the problem solving for you.
-Have awnings/external curtains as well as blockout internal curtains. -Make sure your door locks aren’t Aldi specials and actually worth having -Get your standard fly screens replaced with security screens. -use a tinted security film on street facing windows -have good security lights That said vacant homes are often broken into so to acting like no one lives there is not the way to go.

Isn't this thread about after a collapse, when there's no rule of law?
There's no place for a victim mentality then. Take the fight to the raiders.

I think earlier you did intimate that your employment was linked to Government in some way.

I did consider including cooking smells etc, but it is rather an obvious point after all. And there isnt much you can do, apart from only cooking when the wind can dissipate the smell.
I think you hear me knocking and I think I'm coming in !

Fireplace smoke is probably the worst. If things really got that bad, we'd be minimising use of it.
"Hi, we're cold and hungry and see that you've got a nice fire going..." - local mob.

'Hi, that's very observant of you. Did you also see the belt fed machine gun over there? Now how about all the attractive ladies stand to one side, and everyone else go stand near that big open pit over there" - local prepper who isn't intimidated by local mob

I think you hear me knocking and I think I'm coming in ! Retailers use synthetic smells to entice customers. Perhaps a synthetic putrid smell could be used to deter people.

There's no place for a victim mentality then. Take the fight to the raiders. --- --- There is a time and place for this.... Not necessarily day one.. But then again, maybe day one will require this.. Like said.. A million situations may require a million and one options....
If, when this is the correct option for the day... DO NOT give less than 110%...
Again, my 5 cents of free opinion..

Another aspect to flying under the radar is situational awareness. No point in hiding in place if you have a mob about to come down on your location. Would be better to move out of the way. Things like off grid, security systems, good doors, locks and door frames to slow intruders down and give you time to evade. having multiple planned escape routes with cover wherever you are so you can get out. If you are on the move, use pit fires or no fires, keep watch and be targeted with movements. Ive even thought about getting a small drone to see what is going on around the place. Small ones are light and battery lasts a long time if you use it sparingly. As you travel, Continuously Plan where to meet up if you are separated from your group. Otherwise read up on some army ranger (or similar)manoeuvre guides, lots about moving covertly in small groups there.
Saw a video on how to make trip lines with blanks. Deterrent and alarm.

interesting topic... day 1 everyone will be shivering and cold, day two the dining chairs will be burnt, day 3 the couch, day 4 the house. in this situation id imagine suburbs entirely burnt out as idiots improvise cooking and warmth, and burn their house down, leaping to neighbours. no emergency services will then get out of control quickly.
its a no win situation in the suburbs. if you can save your house, you will have refugees, if you cant save it, you have nothing. I have gamed it out in my head and figure its best to join the horde and save your cache for after a die off. just keep your head low and only carry a knife or something not so fancy. Stay home and pile up garbage at the front door.
i've also gamed out raiding and going early. clean out all shops and holiday homes. Id also invite several old single women neighbours to move in. We could easily feed them, but gain extra eyes and child care so we can do work.
we are all electric with off grid capacity. only running induction cook top kettle, fridges and freezers. having clean clothes will be a give away. we have passive solar heating and dont use any cooling.
