Was looking at some u tubes re Ukraine and their makeshift weapons, like a 50 cal machine gun mounted on an old Lada car.
I would like to think that we Aussies could make stuff like they do, regardless of weather you agree with the 'invasion' the ingenuity of the Ukrainians is to be admired.
I wouldn't be surprised if Russia uses a tactical nuke on the border, just to let the west know they are still a force to be reckoned with.
I admit that I thought the same in relation to the 3 gorges dams, and the damage it would do. But, that may happen naturally as some satellite photos Ive seen show its moving and twisting.
One hopes that the military has EMP proofed their satellites, but domestic and commercial satellites will be toast. Hence the need for alternatives, such as packet ham radio and similar modes.
I too believe an economic collapse, perhaps brought on by the dollar collapse due to dollar printing, is the main issue I think we face. Along with this comes rioting and collapse of food supplies as well as Govt benefits.
Definition of democracy 2: the illusion of freedom.

"Actually that's the first place my mind went to. Pirates aren't a huge problem around us though (for the larger part) but the second every cashed-up bogan with a tinny hits the waters, you might find that changes." Was talking to a fellow prepper who lives on the other side of the Mountain yesterday, and he is a member of one of the sailing clubs down on the coast and has several boats, from a small sailing boat like a Manly Jr, up to a rather large twin motor powered cruiser on a 6 wheel trailer. I jokingly said that he might be getting ready to bug out on the boat to the sea, but what was he going to do about pirates, as he is against having any weapons ? His reply was that pirates are an issue off the coast, and its to do with the drugs trade and the drop offs of drugs via boats. And for that reason, would probably not be bugging out onto the boat, at least for a long term stay. Many a word is said in jest.
The problem isn't a lack of money, food, water or land..The problem is that you've given control of these things to a group of greedy psychopaths who care more about maintaining their own power than helping mankind....

Yes but one can go deep ocean, There are accounts of shipwrecked guys living up to 18 months with only a life raft and drifting in the Atlantic. Take plenty of carbs and fishing gear solar and water & wind turbines and sale the high seas. Pirates don't go off shore and post SHTF they will be out of fuel after a few weeks.

Have to be a pretty big boat, maybe a millionaires 40 meter luxury yacht ? Seriously, that may be a workable strategy, storms and running the necessary fridges, RO water plant, engines for maneuvering, etc not withstanding. I would think that a very well set up comms arrangement would be vital to keep up with the happenings and to determine when it would be safe to go back to land. You would be safe from tsunamis as well, and that's a consideration. And some things to keep the boredom levels down would be also needed, board games etc.
Remember, friends, you and your children are just fodder. You exist to apply time and energy and effort and creativity to natural resources in order to create wealth for the richest people in human history.

A guy I met only had a 36ft yacht and sailed all over in the globe in it. It was his home for several months at a time.

Several months, calling in at 'friendly' ports is a bit different to potentially several years floating around with no possibility of either rescue if something goes wrong, or a 'safe' port to re-stock up in.

Basic bug out kit. Nothing spectacular but has all the basics covered.

Well presented survival tin. There is a lot of content in the Web regarding survival gear, but this guy is quite impressiveness, quick and to the point. Cool demonstrations, Very useful items in the tin. Sewing, fishing and snares, catapult and traps are well made.

I always find it comical when "survival" includes a band-aid.
The rest is good though.

Aus cammo band aids - should count for something ... It is gimmicky stuff, to me if survival came down to a tin it would mean all my preps and decision making had failed. He is a hardcore bushcrafter and makes things - I focus more on survival and how to get out of a mess. It is one of the better survival tin kits. It does have value if going on a day hike and need to get out the rain, make fire or have a minor cut.

"to me if survival came down to a tin it would mean all my preps and decision making had failed"
Or in other words, its all turned to s..t.
If we have to leave here, a pocket sized 'survival' tin isn't gonna do much as its all gone 'legs up' and the situation is almost hopeless.
But I too am the sort of person who when given 5 minutes to solve a problem upon which my life depends, thinks about it for 4 1/2 minutes and then does what's needed in the last 30 seconds.
There will always be 'stuff' around to use from abandoned cars and so on, so minimal carry. But until you get to the extra 'stuff', such a tin may well be useful.
We've concentrated on making our farm our BOL. We know what's here, what grows, what supplies and skills we have for survival.

Crow bar and hacksaw blade, big bag and few tools for gathering supplies in an urban area -yip the Mad Max scenario. Haiti is now Mad max with 80% of urban areas controlled by gangs. Survival tin is a backup of a backup. Read the short book "an island to oneself", Neal goes to a small abandoned pacific island and lives there for 6 years. The first thing he did was put together a small survival kit and bury it incase everything got lost (Tsunami/fire/raiders) - he had no way to get of the island. His survival was fishing/ chickens that he feed with coconuts and veg garden. Luckily for him he discovered by accident that he had to self pollinate the veg as there were no bees, after reading some book by Darwin. Good SHORT read. www.scribd.com/document/196166202/TOM-NEALE-an-Island-to-Oneself

Another good one is wrecked on a reef by francois Raynal. About survival for a year and a half on Auckland islands and self-rescue by sailing a small boat back to New Zealand.

"There are more than 8 million empty homes in rural Japan, and local governments are selling them for as little as $500 in a bid to lure residents www.insider.com/japanese-government-selling-rural-homes-cheap-akiya-banks-2021-5" In the words of Admiral Akbar - "It's a trap". Most Akiya are abandoned for a reason. Modern building codes, in particular earthquake, render them unfixable. It's a bulldoze and rebuild story for pretty much all of them. As a foreigner, the Japanese system is a nightmare to deal with. As a foreigner, you have to go through a middleman and the 'available selection' drops to a tiny number when you actually try. If you are really keen, some regional cities will give you a free plot of land, as long as you build on it within 12 months. Much cleaner than dealing with a demolition house.

As far as INCH goes, my plan largely aligns with MWT. We are in a rural area with forest everywhere, so that's my plan. Can always bury a cache if need be. No way at all could we cart enough to survive for a long time on. That's just reality for us.
My family all has foreign citizenship too, so "get on a plane" would be the plan if we had to leave the country, though it would need to occur early. Since there's no country that we can walk across the border to "to escape the soviets", it's stay in place, hide in the forest temporarily if need be, or if we are obviously clearly going to be screwed, leave the country.

I use trekking poles when walking/hiking in bush. Found them indispensable. Been looking at survival walking poles. Found a number of factory make ones that are quite useful, This woman's PVC pipe one is quite interesting and has potential. The vid is a bit long winded but useful ideas. Engineered tool
