@spinifex ... yeah nah, more is good if you've got the budget & people. If China were coming for us with air & naval forces I'd be wanting (aside from S400/patriot capability) SSNs, ++AEW&C, ++P8's & Superhornets (inc ++ Growlers) with a bucket load of JASSM & LRASM. That would complement our layered defences nicely. A couple of carrier battle groups would be nice... I wish. Aren't the US JASSM & LRASM Lockheed built products?? And as such ... do they cost 5 times as much as any other comparable product and have questionable effectiveness?

@spinifex yes and no but for various technical reasons, there aren't many viable, integrated, tested & proven alternatives

Seems like they are playing a different card now, FB i read is un-deleting past posts so as to support the current narrative. This is how censorship is used, the data is censored/hidden so as to support the chosen narrative when it fits.

I think it's time for Australia to formally recognise Taiwan ... I mean its not like we have much to lose in the trade/exports department. China has already screwed us over in that regard, so yeah now is a great time to formally recognise Taiwan IMHO. If a coal/iron ore magnate or two had to take a little profit hit and seek new markets, I'm sure I could manage to suffer through that in the national interest.

Manufacturing consent. Well known theory. Check it out by Noam Chomsky.

Not really a lot of innovative thinking on display in the article.
And using Singapore and Switzerland as examples of the proposed doctrine is absurd.
Neither of those two places have the immense economic/military magnetism of an entire continent jam-packed with vital natural resources. No-one on Gods green earth has a good reason to press home a costly attack on either of them.
Its time to stop messing around with "conventional forces" and join "Club Nuke".

Hundreds of hypersonic missiles, on mobile launchers, with a nuclear payload, hidden all around Australia.

Conventional forces remain a necessary stepping stone of course, but yeah, when push comes to shove, the ability to retaliate with nukes means an adversary really has to consider the potentially extreme cost of picking a fight that could end up nuclear. Given the changing regional & global balance of economic & military power we can't keep up with a small sophisticated conventional military. Adding a nuclear deterrent makes a lot of sense for our future national security against aggressors like China. Put those nukes on a couple of SSBNs and an adversary needs a massive & highly skilled capability to detect, localise & destroy that SSBN threat before it let's loose. China does not have that capability and won't have it for some time.

A prolific network of long and short range SAM weapon systems would be a comfort in the shorter term. Especially when combined with an air force focused on maritime surveillance and strike capability. We all know we ain't getting a truly potent SSBN capability any time soon. If ever.

If China denies the existence of these armed fishing boats, I assume they won't notice when our navy use them for target practice.
