I agree with most of what has been put up. I would add that I would hurry out and hire some bigger equipment that I don't have like a bob cat or small excavator as I would not have to return it and I have the fuels already. I would have to be quick but I reckon I could at a minimum a large rotary hoe and post hole borer

You mean Redback'not'trading? [don't seem to be trading] As I've mentioned before, the jar supply place in Cheltenham told me that they're getting a shipment in of tattler lids in sometime soon and I just reuse the standard ball lids with success. Where in cheltenham? i would like to chech them out

I saw a show on TVs vasilli's garden wher a cabbage was stored and then fermented in a 20 l plastic drum with the wide lid. I will search for it on you tub

Agreed. Only when our basic needs are met can we see the value in luxury items. Unless - in the event of a lead shortage - the similar properties of gold make it suitable for forming bullets. This seems ridiculously extravagant pre-crunch, but if things get tight, it may be an option. Need to be careful melting down jewellery. Could be shot by your wife's wedding rings

I have the canner on for the first time right now. We are trying to can potatoes, we also have the dehydrated running for the second day in a row. fun fun fun. Paul Canning potatoes is particularly difficult due to low acid,so ensure you have a good recipe that give long enough to kill all bugs

Make sure you wear your apron to the little river shoot!! We could practice bartering, beans for ammo.... I bought 25 kg bag of chickpeas from Hindustan. I could barter them for three 50 cal cartridges.

Preserving and canning are slightly different. Canning is for meats and other low acid foods ( simplification) preserving (bottling). The higher than boiling point temperature used in canning kills all the bugs. The best part is the prevention of waste in a glut and the availability in a shortage. Carefully done and canning could be done on a fire but it would be easy to destroy the lighter cheaper pressure cookers like mine in the heat of a fire. Not cheap to set up but can save $$ in the longer term

Last night we used three pint jars ( i canned it several month ago. It has a high vinegar content so cans well) of a secret sauce (sauerbraten) on roasted scotch fillet with knurdel. Gotta love European food

We are not allowed to even put a container on our property without a permit and it must be hidden from the road. The permit is expensive and I have seen quite a few so I don't think they enforce this to harshly, but you don't know til they come knocking

Not to sure about that one. Being down in Melbourne i think i would prefer it to happen in winter cause i personally think i have enough supplies and cold weather gear to get a far way out out of the city before the rest of the sheeples. I would think that people would prefer to stay indoors and keep warm during this season and be less likely to venture out. Yeah for sure the cold will keep melbournians indoors for a while. Also in winter puts you just before the growing season so a crop could be planted instantly for some of the cauli and brocci family and a big spring plant could be undertaken. I could hatch a big lot of eggs so the chicken population has a big jump while I eat into my stocks of grains etc. my chicken menagerie is at a peace time strength and would only feed my immediate family at the moment with eggs . No meat yet. May have to do a raid to a western Victoria farm that has meat chickens.......... ?

I was wondering what consequences would follow a financial hiccup, what may be in short supply etc. I began looking at pantry products. To my surprise ( I should not have been) aldi food wrap and alfoil are made in China. So I went to Coles and all of their brands were all made in China and at least twice the aldi price. I Decided to increase my standard stock of alfoil

I was just surprised by 'she who must be obeyed'. I showed her T.he pictures of the queues in Greece. She asked a couple of questions and she insisted we go and withdrw some cash like the people in Greece should have done weeks ago. Then she asked how our fuel stock was and insisted we go fill up two of the empty jerry cans. I enjoyed the surprise ?

picked up a can of corn beef to road test. 340g. It had a layer of fat and gelatin on the top. Not excessive but I only ate the gelatin incidentally. It was about $6 so not cheap, however it is product of Australia made to a kiwi recipe according to the blurb on the can. As expected not as good as fresh but surprisingly tastey I had it with some cheese as a side and straight from the can. i think heated for just a few minutes would have mixed the fat and gelatin,making it very acceptable. My pick over camp pie every time. there were several other brands but this was the cheapest that was aussie made.
