I must confer with all those who say that water is probably the most important asset that any property owner can have. 2014 saw our average rainfall drop from a 100 year average of about 506 millimetres to 306 millimetres. A drop of 200 millimetres would not have been as bad as it sounds if it had fallen in rain events of more than 20 millimetres at a time instead of the small amounts we received that virtually disappeared as soon as they hit the dust. The great thing about the metric system is that for every square metre of catchment area every millimetre of rain that falls equals a litre. 100 square metres of roof area equals 100 litres of potential water savings. Find out the long term average rainfall in your area, multiply that by the roof areas that are connected or will be to your tanks and it will give you an idea of your rainfall water saving potential. Dams for groundwater runoff are the cheapest storage you can have per litre stored but evaporation and seepage will be an issue but they do come in handy especially if you have a good catchment area. We have a neighbour who had a bore put in so that he could have a more reliable water supply. Over $10,000 later he has water, and plenty of it, but it is unusable because of the high levels of salts and he cannot put in a desalinisation plant because there are laws as what you have to do to get rid of the salts. Also the cost of the additional plant would make it uneconomical. From a preppers point of view I believe we have to learn to live with years of diminished rainfall by growing more than we need in the better years and storing as much as we can. We preserve fruit, jams and juices by bottling in the years we have extra the produce and we also freeze fruit and vegetables. In a true after the lights out scenario what would concern me is maintaining our solar power system to a level that would enable us to run the freezer so in the future and preserving would all need to be done by bottling. We cannot grow sugar here in Victoria so we are looking at, when we get another good year, juicing grapes and rendering the juice down and using that as a sugar substitute to enable us to continue to make jam. Sugar is not required to preserve fruit but some varieties need a sweetener before they are consumed, rhubarb is one, and I am looking at some of the herbs that are capable of being used as sweeteners. Water usage is something that in good years when we have plenty of it is not the priority that it should be. In years like 2014 we revisit any improvements we can make to our storage capacity and the ways we can minimise its use i.e. wicking beds and hydroponics. I would say that for most of us when we first look at a property rainfall is not the primary concern, getting hold of the land super cedes all other emotions. Once the property is ours then it is time to make all the other decisions that will make, or break, the lifestyle we would like to lead. Peter the easiest sweetener is honey. Well not so easy but quite do able. And not super expensive to set up. Plus as well as jam you have mead and a bacterial barrier if required. Sad about the drop in rainfall. We have rellys in manangatang area and they are into wheat. Can be very hard and heartbreaking to watch you work wilt and wither.

I like the Aldi brand, and have had a few random ones from NQR, basically it is a mylar bag filled with pre cooked reice, requiring you to only heat it back up, cannot beat that for convenience. I really like the aldi rice it is cheap and tasty. However it is halal certified. Sorry pete, but I just gotta have it

I have listened to a few tubes on greyman. Don't wear a suit to the beach, thongs to the opera, ski gear in Alice or bling to a klan meet. On a serious note a fluoro shirts. I wear one for work now and I can go anywhere now and it is there. Trolley boys, delivery dudes almost all warehouse type workers. Fluoro is the new gray. I have a few cans of paint in various colours to paint whatever I want at short notice.

Almost need a new thread. I have worked in the area of disability and people in need. There are various levels of help required. From $ to a kick up the arse. I don't know the % of people who don't genuinely try to get a job, but the media seem to find people that just don't want to work for the inconvenience. I have sourced supported accomodation for people who were disappointed that the flat did not have an ensuite. The solution is not easy, go really hard or take a social soft approach. Neither will work without complicated background support. If we could ensure children had established work ethics and there were areas to employ them. We would be on the right track.

Actually, tell me the make & model and I'll look up the MSDS. Tablets sometimes have binding agents that may be nasty. Thanks that would be great if you could find out as they would be convenient for storing.

In America its quite big with firearms owners, some of these people are likely also preppers. Not sure I'd directly associate it with preppers though. Bit like all basket ball players are tall, but just coz you are tall doe not make you a basket ball player.

I think the success or failure of any invasion will be how many true and armed AUSSIES there are! How many gots and metros will flee with the women and children! And if our PM at the time has a set or not! So we want to see Tony's cojones.

I have it as a bleach substitute (it has a much longer shelf life than liquid bleach) and for nuking bugs in water. One of my main concerns about a grid down scenario is loss of sanitation systems, as I live in suburbia atm. This stuff should be a great help plus it should have barter value (although a decent sales pitch may be necessary). Mr pete, a while ago you mentioned chemicals in pools. We use the pool tablets that are 5 tablets to kg. are these realy giant water purification tablets like for a plastic tank with yuk water?

i think it is original but who knows. if you are planning to grow your own food and have a good stock of seeds and have the skills to use them. As soon as it is clear the shtf, rush to bunnings or you local nursery and buy up all their suitable food seedlings and fruit trees This will give you a three week plus head start on producing food from seeds. And the ability to make and orchard if you have not already done it. Pay with that credit card you have in reserve that may never need to be paid back or cash if you really trully have too. It will not be a first thought for you average zombie so you will beat the crowds and pick up some fertilisers etc at the same time. these are some silver beet and broccoli I have tried to grow from seed. 3 weeks already!

If someone puts $50 per week to prepping they would have near 100 kg of rice and a means to cook it in 2 months. I know that is not enough but it shows that a regular amount well spent will get you there eventually. Even if I only had $50 per month of canned food it would add up. We are now up to 40 litres of uht milk and it is effectively rotated. It took awhile but with a few boxes of cereal we have breakfast sorted in a short term scenario It is prioritisation of what is first. There are people out there on low incomes and lots of kids who will struggle to find any $$. They will really struggle to store food and have a stash of cash. I don't know what they can do other than try. Collect empty soft drink bottles for water, but it will be hardest for them. i am super fortunate at this point in my life and could even spend a bit more on food, but I am attempting a balance. Sometimes not so well, but moving along and enjoying it as I go.
