We are very blessed living in our Bol Picked up cheaply as a weekender 20 yrs ago- so I know the difficulties of setting up a retreat when your not there all the time While not as isolated as u would like if shtf it's not bad and being there all the time gives for greater security and ability to run animals crops etc and practise the lifestyle we would adopt post collapse For Victorians this weekend is the hema "festival of the sword" at Monash uni, weekend may 6 is knifemakers convention and weekend may 20 is the shot show

Once u hit that rural lifestyle you'll never ever go back to suburbia Prepping self sufficiency food production etc gets so much easier Even only a small block it's amazing what u can do Certainly keeps u busy and fit A side effect of rural lifestyle is patchy internet that drops out and you post twice😗

Anyone any experience with zert? They've got an Australian group now and had a table at the recent Melbourne gun show The guys seemed like very sensible prepper types and the zombie thing is just an excuse for preparedness

My son is back from his "cyclonic "honeymoon on hayman and Hamilton island He paints a different picture that you get from the media who seem to find the most acopic pathetic blaming everything and everyone else type individuals Buildings were fine- cyclone rated- and damage superficial and vegetation mainly Resorts provided heaps of food and water-slight beer shortage but minibar was free!!!!!! Chartered flight by resort to get tourists out!! Good financial recompense for stuffed holiday Think I may have gained a prepper son out of this😍😍talking about water and food storage and disaster preparedness Take home lessons 1 media can't be trusted to tell whole story Obviously will try to sensationalise worse case scenario 2 as a parent was worried sick but know I've got a very sensible lad and dil so common sense is a great prep 3 bottled water and food for several days will cover most disasters--- preparation isn't rocket science

Bit light on beer was only supply problem! Messy and destructive but no danger( all cyclone rated buildings)-lotsa food and drink Boat back to Hamilton tonight -plane to Sydney and then home Eventful honeymoon!!!! Will name first daughter Debbie!! The media try to sensationalise everything!!

I struggle with this I am big on individual freedoms but also on social responsibility Big on libertarian scale but the more left I go the more government control I face Like freedom with social responsibility and don't trust anyone In authority

Great thread and very interesting We have success with potatoes sweet potatoe pumpkin and squash self seeding here- can't get rid of potatoes in fact Here in Vic -rainfall 60" per year Pigs have tilled the soil and I have planted vegetables after moving them to other paddocks- they are better than tractors for ploughing paddocks ready for planting Goes against a lot of what you said but they get rid of all weeds/ grasses and gives u a clean slate for planting Planting grains in the paddocks this year so see how that goes

We have friends in the local permaculture group who clearly tend towards preparedness but we keep conversations simple about things we have in common and don't advertise. As much as many preppers / survivalists seem to be right-wing + gun nut + zombie-invasion types, the reality is that a lot of the "leftie greenies" are probably much better prepared for an event due to their productive gardens, offgrid low-impact living etc. Some of the non-prepping blogs I follow are by people who would hate to be called preppers, but in reality are already living the back-to-the-land lifestyle that many preppers aspire to. We must know different lefties! Most vegan greenies I know live in cities and have no idea about farming/ food production etc but are very happy to dictate to others how they should live despite having no real practical knowledge and experience They sit in cafes drinking their soy chai decaf vegan halal kosher gay politically correct lattes and try to tell us all what to do

While I love red dots , eotechs and modern night vision and thermal, I always worry about batteries Not only for daily use but in a prolonged shtf they maybe scarce and these scopes useless I like the low powered (1-4)30 mm tubes, with illuminated reticles( so you can use night and thermal) So even without batteries you can still have a useable reticle My eyes are too crap for iron sights

You trying to make me feel old with all these things from the past 😗! It's funny when you reminisce about "latest greatest "things that you remember coming in , and don't exist today Especially with all these new calibers of the last few years, wonder which ones will stand the test of time

Self sufficiency in food and energy is hard and very very time consuming-very hard to do when your working full time We dabble in it and love growing our own veggies and fruit, breeding chickens and pigs for eggs and meat and the odd cow and hunted deer While nowhere near self sufficient I believe the infrastructure is there to ramp up production if shtf and we were no longer working and had extra hands to help It's still damn good fun even if the world doesn't end🙂

I love a good rant. Well done Grumble. I keep my prepping secret not for security reasons (I'm happy to repel boarders), but because I don't want to be associated with the whackjobs that are so often the face of prepping. It makes me cringe to be put in the same box as them. In my experience I've found the loudest voices on forums to usually be the least prepared. And the type to most often attack newbies. Case in point: a morbidly obese man, late 50's, still lives in a trailer with his mum, sum total of preps is a box of guns and some 20l plastic buckets full of 2 minute noodles and tuna, yet who presents himself as the australian guru of survivalists and denigrates almost everybody else. It is his type who cast a shadow over all of us. Think this would describe a lot of armchair preppers!!!
