I think Remmy and BCE we have become comfortable.... it is easy to do stuff like washing and cooking with the power on... take it away and bam no one knows what to do. One of my work colleagues had to go and "rescue" his daughter and grandkids (flying into townsville and driving to Bowen) as he could not believe the government was telling everyone to boil their water due to contamination. I felt like saying W T F but stopped myself, in NZ they should be used to natural disasters earthqakes etc. so I am a bit shocked to see how unprepared people are

My first cyclone a few (20 odd) years ago saw my unit without power for 10 days, as luck would have it it rained about 4 feet of water over that period and i had 3 plastic buckets in said rain to collect water, if i wanted to shower i stood in rain in bathing suit and scrubbed with a bit of shower gel we all knew we would have no help and had to fend for ourselves (lucky the local sewerage plant had a generator and we had a couple of days warning) sooooo over all of these people who can't cope and do it tough for a day or two... admittedly I have got a bit soft in my old age as I had trouble getting home from work and had to summon up the courage to drive the 1.5 hour round trip over very wet dark dirt roads to get home on the friday due to localised flooding

Cashless is all good till cyclone Debbie or whomever comes along and there is no power for a couple of days... all of a sudden cash is king and those with cards or phone apps (a lot of phones being dead due to internet providers not working) find themselves in a tricky situation

Definately 4 bars of hard soap... with the occasional bar of toilet soap for gifts or personal luxury... the hard soap you can grate and boil it down then add essential oils and not sure but I think Granny used melted lard to make a softer soap for washing the skin... I remember asking my mum why Granny had her soap sitting in the sun (back in the 70's) and she said she was curing the soap

No, it's just nasal piercing that gets me. I can't help but think of the snot problems that could arise. Hey Pete I have my nose pierced (one side) no snot problems here, and just as all of my tatts have a personal meaning, my nose ring has a meaning to me as well

Excellent update. I've been criticised before for running threads on my retreat, accused of lacking judgement on persec and/or boasting about my progress, but I firmly believe threads like this inspire others, so well done Grey. Frostbite I for one really enjoy the updates/progress on your place so please keep them coming.... Grey your place is awesome

My brother - in - law and sister stayed with me a couple of weeks ago and he commented that I had a lot of toilet paper and cans of food (packed away but nowhere to hide it) he asked me if I was one of those prepper people lol I had a chuckle and told him very truthfully that when the rains come my place can be flooded in for a few weeks at a time and there have been instances where my closest town has been without food (as trucks cant get through) for up to 3 weeks he was surprised that I was so prepared and quite comfortable knowing we would eat even if we did not go to the shop every day

Just got my electricity bill....... made 800kw via my new solar and somehow sold it to the grid for 6c/kWh with a cost to provide the solar of $6.50 but bought 800kw for 36c/kWh and had to pay over $100 to get the supply... feeling very ripped off :/ seeing as i just paid $6500 to install solar

Went to my local market today and found some unusual plants..... a Longan (which is a cousin of a Lychee), a verigated chilli, a banana flavoured passion fruit and a Naranjilla (has a sweet yellow fruit but has major prickles) can't wait for the heatwave to be over so I can plant these goodies

Be very careful when using essential oils on cats as they do not have the enzyme in their liver to break down the essential oils and it will build up in their system and eventually they will die of a form of toxic shock.... tea tree and eucalyptus should be used very sparingly on dogs too as their livers are much smaller than ours and it takes longer for the oils to be excreted from their bodies

There's plenty of brush leftover. I'm thinking about making a raised bed out of small sticks hugelculture style. I expect there will be a lot of ash leftover when those piles get burnt, so that might be useful. It's been suggested to me that I should go to the nearby beach and grab a load of seaweed to condition the soil. I'm wondering if the residual salt from this might have a negative impact. Another thing I need to consider is where to locate the orchard and veggies, given the number of large trees creating areas of shade Frosty find an area that gets sun dead winter... it will provide a shady spot dead summer when everything will burn... helps with watering in summer

Just wondering if any one else has a problem with loyalty cards.... went into Dan Murphy's today to purchase some vodka ( for medicinal purposes after TSHTF I swear lol ) and I was asked YET again to sign up to their loyalty program. I refused and the girl behind the counter rolled her eyes and proceeded to tell me how I was being silly as I would have saved $5 with the purchase I was making. Does anyone else have a problem with the government/ corporations knowing how much you purchase?

Hey Token... bit like prepping hey? What works for one isn't necessarily the best fit for another, I like the fact that for the most part (clippings) only costs me some sweat, petrol and calories and i can access this anytime of the year, I also know it is chemical free and can adjust the amount of green clippings to dry leaves depending on what is going on in the coop too much green and things go a bit mushy... too much dry leaves and the composting slows down and I get flies and smell... I only add the sugar cane if it is really wet weather wise the chooks seem healthy and love to scratch in the mix
