Hi and welcome.
All good advice above.
Start small. Get a bit of gear together that will see you through a 3 day dilemma then work from there. Also learn how to use, care for and maintain what you have. I just watched a numpty on ch7 cut the head off a snake with a bowie knife so he could skin then eat it. His chopping block was a piece of sandstone, clearly not good for the knife long term and a knife is something you want as a long term item.

There is a lot of risk in commandeering equipment you are not familiar with or know it’s maintenance history. I myself would not like to use such equipment for that reason but that said with flames licking your backdoor something might be better than nothing.

Heinz baked bean tins are now only 300g. I think they used to be 425g. Same price though.

Yeah the union situation was malignant back then and was a major contributor to manufacturing decline. There is a happy medium there somewhere but it seems the door has swung a long way the other way now. We need wages growth now due to this insane property (bubble?) market. I saw a graph showing the home loan debt curve from the 80’s compared to now and it says without significant wage growth that the banks loan assessments are now miscalculating when a home can be paid off. goodbye 25-30 year loans, hallo 35-40 year loans. The alternative is a property retraction or crash to bring the rudder back in line with most Aussies real situation. I saw a shitbox house and 30 acres that sold for 600k 2 years ago now asking 1.8mill. Fark off! I want my kids to have a chance, so far it’s not looking good. Even my place has seen huge gains in 18 months. It means nothing to me, i just want everyday Joe and my kids to have a chance to continue to live in my area. At the moment there are heaps of gold coast numpties, FIFO blowouts and generally uber rich dickwads moving here. We aint in Kansas anymore Toto.

One of the big considerations is the use of minimum till cropping. No tilling means mice can safely breed in burrows and cause plagues. Some areas are ploughing thier fallow land and having good success in reducing the mice. Poison is the only viable alternative and the moron advocating catch and release quickly went back to sleep. I’m not sure about follow on effects with bromadialone but owls and predatory birds and other animals might get a gut ache or worse suffer considerable numbers of deaths leading the way for the next plague.

6.5 x 55 is also a pretty nice calibre.

Too right. We are going hammer and tongs down that path. Vicco takes the cake again in that regard with their vicstapo covid officers. All for what? we are an island nation safe from covid and the only issue is imports from overseas bringing it here. Tell me why it is so important to open up to the world again? I’m living the dream…Property, livestock, heaps of work, growing super, kids doing well at school, travel in country. It’s the top 5 that want their cheap professional labour back so they can again avoid their social responsibility to this country by paying fair wages with 1st world conditions. If they had it their way we’d all be deliveroo drivers and gig workers. Time to turn the screws. From your wording, I would say that you are referring to communism - whereas I was referring to authoritarian. These are 2 very different idealogies. I was not referring to communism at all. If that what i said is considered communist then the elite have won.

This is getting very reminiscent of several “authoritarian” countries in 20th century Europe where you had to show your paperwork on demand - with secret service people travelling around in full length trench coats demanding papers. And the people being ruled by fear. Plus, the media being very cautious in what they said. Very reminiscent. Can anyone see the parallels? Too right. We are going hammer and tongs down that path. Vicco takes the cake again in that regard with their vicstapo covid officers. All for what? we are an island nation safe from covid and the only issue is imports from overseas bringing it here. that is pretty full on. it is also more of a reason to steer clear of this shortsighted population growth mantra. We don’t need it, look at all the issues with the extra 5 million that arrived here over the past decade and a half. cities becoming unliveable, housing is unaffordable, services stretched beyond their means, the list goes on. In the past 50 years the US had grown 120million in population and many of them in the Pacific SW where it is naturally dry. All that extra pressure is making this a real problem. unsustainable growth leads to unsustainable lives. All the extra taxes collected and economy developed will mean sqaut as this issue continues.

On a slightly tangential but possibly related topic: An acquaintance of mine just bought a low mileage second hand 200 series land cruiser for $30 000 more than the cost of a brand new 300 series. Why? Because the wait time to receive a new 300 series is 8 months. Makes me wonder why the wait time is 8 months. Lots of different products are seeing longer and longer delays in delivery of orders. Is this a Covid effect? Or a China messing with supplies of goods and components of goods effect? wow so it is true about paying more for 2nd hand landcruisers than new! duckduckgo chipageddon about lack of micro chips for products. It’s not really a joke anymore and is a valid reason why we are waiting a long time for ordered goods.

I reckon the biggest thing is just because you don’t like it, it doesn’t mean it can’t happen. That is the biggest attitude from mollycoddle land.
Farms produce so let farmers farm. If you don’t like it leave.

What is the definition of a rifle range? Is an area used to sight your rifle in a rifle range? No not yet but this sort of crap was on the anti agenda not long ago. Cooler heads prevailed in that instance. The firearms precursor legislation will be interesting to watch.

The hippy down the road has started prepping his beds for planting. i’ve followed suit. Conditions have been horrible for gardening due to far too much rain. It has dried out over the past 2 weeks so my Autumn garden is going in with peas, carrots, onions, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, ground spinach, garlic and i’ve put in six more sweet potato runners.
I’m experimenting with gypsum to raise sulfur levels while keeping the soils structure in good nick. I’m also using natramin hi phos rock fertiliser for long term slow release fertiliser. my compost is delicious and i’m getting worms in the top 1/3 of the pile.
I need to find some spuds to go in as well.
My experiments with leaving stuff in the dirt until needed as finished. The only success was the broccoli that kept producing little heads for over a year after harvest. The silverbeet turned to crap and the carrots started to get attacked by grubs below the ground. I was able to leave the onions in for a long time without much problem. I’ll probably never grow more than 1 cucumber vine again. We just don’t eat much it even though it is really nice.

Plastic hoses do burn and melt but a skilled and carful operator will watch out for this i.e. don’t drag it over burning logs, glowing coals etc. It does take a bit to damage them though so don’t worry too much about that. The advantage of plastic is rapid deployment of hose from a reel whilst the hose is pressurised and ready to go and slips through the bush well. Get the plastic hose first. Also don’t be convinced to buy a plastic reel regardless of fireproof claims. Some may disagree with that but why risk it?
Get good quality hose, i!ve seen cheap crap burst and put a cockies fire rig out of action, he did have a dual stage Davey pump which is overkill in my opinion. If you need to put that much water out in a hurry you probably should not be there! you can’t pressurise rolled up flexible hose due to burst risk so it needs to be rolled out then pressurised. That could be a problem for a single bloke operating a unit. Canvas hose is good for where you need an extension to get to difficult places away from your ute. canvas is more likely to get damaged from cuts due to mishandling. Canvas can also allow a lot of water to flow but is obviously limited by the branch you intend to use.
